About Makassar & Tana Toraja

Makassar formerly called Ujungpandang is the capital city of South Sulawesi province. Makassar is one of the primary ports of the eastern archipelago.  Its shops and markets display locally made silk sarongs, silver filigree and gold work as well as goods, handicrafts and antiques. Historical sites to see in Makassar include Fort Rotterdam, for centuries it was a stronghold of the Dutch power in the east Indies. La Galigo museum which occupies a former spice warehouse, and the tomb of the 19th century freedom fighter, Diponegoro.  At several places along the waterfront, traditional Bugis and Makassarese sailing craft are tied up, unloading catches or taking on cargoes bound for Java.

TANA TORAJA (TORAJA LAND)

With majestic panoramas, picturesque villages and dramatic ceremonies, Tana Toraja is definitely one of the highlights of Sulawesi's tourist attractions.  The Toraja region is famous for the rituals accompanying death.  For the Torajans, the dead are as much a part of society as the living.  The deceased are laid to rest in cliff-side stone crypts or caves guarded by tau-tau effigies.(Tau tau, life-size, carved wooden effigies of the dead).  To conduct their souls safely into the next world, elaborate funeral ceremonies are held.

Places of interests around Torajaland:

- Londa village, one of the most frequently visited cave burial sites.  Adjacent to the caves is a balcony filled with tau tau gazing out over lush rice fields.  The caves are filled with coffins and bones artistically arranged for visitors.

- Lemo, has one of the most impressive cliff-side grave sites in the entire region.  Dozens of effigies stand solemnly in niches overlooking the valley.  Adjacent to them are carved wooden doors which seal the remains of the deceased in tombs hewn out of the cliff.

- Ke'te' Kesu', is one of the oldest traditional village and most visited hanging graves in Toraja region.

- Sa'dan, traditional waving textiles.

- Batutumonga, situated on the foot of Mt. Seasean.  This is a good view point from where you can see a large part of Tanatoraja.

- Marante, a fine traditional village and has hanging graves with several Tau tau, skulls on the coffins and a cave with scattered bones.

- Nanggala, this traditional village has a particularly grandiose traditional house and an impressive 10 rice barns.
