Through all the years that I have been raising rabbits I have heard the term Prolapsed Uterus several times but had never seen it for myself.  I have been told that it does not occur often.  My first encounter with Prolapsed Uterus was when a friend of mine called me to tell me that a Chinchilla Netherland Dwarf that I had bought for her had died.  I asked her what had happened and she told me that she had a Prolapsed Uterus and bled to death.  I was grossed out at one point but I was also very curious as to what it actually looked like so she e-mailed me a picture.  There are times where I look at it and it still turns my stomach.

Prolapsed Uterus is a condition that results in the entire Uterus being discharged from the body and it ends up turned inside out.  I have heard that this tends to be a genetic defect in cows but I am not sure if it is the same in rabbits though I would assume that it can be.  Most of us are unsure if it is a genetic defect or if it is just a fluke that shows up once in awhile.  I have asked several other breeders and some of them said that they had never seen a Prolapsed Uterus even after raising rabbits for almost 20 years.  The cause of the condition is the muscles and tendons that hold the Uterus in place in the doe's abdominal cavity are weak.  Depending on the actual weakness of the muscles and tendons the Uterus can be discharged anywhere from the doe's first heat cycle to their first pregnancy.  In the case that my friend experienced the condition became aparent as the doe was aproaching 6 months.  No matter what time of their life this happens the condtion is fatal as it results in the doe bleeding to death.  The picture posted below is kinda graphic, but I beleive a picture would best help show you the end result of what happens.  The doe in the picture has actually been cleaned up a bit.  When first discovered she was quite a mess.
