Gibbons by Chen Wen Hsi

This Chinese ink painting of gibbons playing amidst tree branches is by another eminent Nanyang Style artist, Chen Wen Hsi. The artist, who was born in Jieyang (near Shantou) in the Guangdong Province of China in 1906, was fond of painting animals and landscapes. His Chinese ink paintings, at times semi-abstract in form, reveal the influence of 20th century Western art, in particular Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. Chen Wen Hsi also painted in the oil medium. In 1992, he was posthumusly honored with a meritorious service award for his contributions to the community.

The above was taken from the art series of the commemorative stamp issue of singapore. So dont ask me what Nanyang style is etc... because I dont know.
