The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corp is an
organization started by the Secretary of the Navy in 1959 as a way for young men and women ages 13-17 to have an opportunity
to experience the Sea Services without the commitment to enlist. This program affords these future young leaders a chance
to learn discipline, honor, teamwork and patriotism. The cadets learn while performing worthwhile tasks from professional
Navy and Coast Guard personnel, retired veterans and dedicated civilian volunteers.
The unit here in Alaska was commissioned on May 4, 2002, but
had been in existence for approximately 18 months prior to that date. All recruits
must attend a 2-week boot camp, which are held in the lower 48 states. Once they
complete boot camp the cadets can attend summer training opportunities all over the United States and even abroad. They have
the opportunity to serve two-week cruises on US Navy, Coast Guard and even foreign Naval Vessels and bases. They can go to
schools such as medical, submarine, music, communications, aviation and even Navy SEALS.
Sea Cadet units are organized as either
divisions, squadrons, or battalions. Divisions closely reflect the surface navy, while squadrons are geared toward the field
of naval aviation, and battalions meanwhile reflect Navy construction battalions (Seabees).
Whether a division, squadron, or battalion,
your local unit has one main purpose, and that is to foster teamwork, camaraderie and an understanding of the military command
structure.
Cadets are instructed by Naval Reserve
Officers, Sea Cadet Officers, and senior cadets through classroom and applied instruction in subjects such as basic seamanship,
military drill, and leadership.
Our unit is prepared to participate in community events such as
parades, sporting events (Color Guard), fairs, and many other activities. They may also tour or train aboard Navy and Coast
Guard ships and shore stations. They may participate in community service such as working in Veterans' hospitals and clothing
and food drives.
Sea Cadet training consists of Navy Non-Resident
Correspondence Courses (NRCC), two-week training schools, shipboard training, and training arranged within Alaska by
the Commanding Officer with assistance from other military groups (Coast Guard, Marines, etc.)
Two-week training (TWT) normally takes
place during summer months and occasionally during winter and spring break. The first TWT for all cadets is NSCC Recruit Training,
better known as boot camp. Boot camp is a scaled down version of the Navy's boot camp. For the two-week period, cadets are
instructed by active, reserve military personnel and Sea Cadet officers in military drill and discipline, physical fitness,
seamanship, shipboard safety, first aid, naval history, and leadership.
After cadets have successfully completed
boot camp, they can then participate in advanced training. Advanced training currently consists of airman school (aviation),
submarine seminar, hospital corpsman school (medical), seal team training, amphibious training, petty officer leadership academy,
master-at-arms school (military police/law), FAA ground school, Seabee school (civil engineering), and shipboard training
to name just a few.
Sea Cadet training is held throughout
the continental United
States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam on military installations. Additionally, those cadets who exhibit extraordinary initiative and leadership ability
may participate in annual exchanges with Sea Cadet Organizations around the world.
