Materials

There are a number of charming choices available in the design and creation of a luxuriously appointed hat. The only limitation is the imagination...

Straw is a delightful lightweight choice which can be hand blocked and shaped into either a classically tailored contour or an undulating romantic profile. Subtle hand- dying produces richly shaded colors which are appropriate for any time of the year.

Buckram hats use a combination of hand-blocking, patterning and wiring to create a foundation in a variety of lovely silhouettes. They can then be covered in an array of exquisite fabrics and tied simply with a lustrous bow, or swathed in heritage lace. An Heirloom to be passed on.

Trimmings

Trimmings and embellishments on any hat complete the character and soul of the design and can range from sculpted shaded silk to a simple ribbon; from a single rose to a garland encircled crown; from a snippet of vintage lace to flourishes of silk organdy. Brides are encouraged to consider using Family Heirlooms such as lace, pins, belt buckles or fabrics in their wedding attire.

Wuthering Hats offers four distinctive styles of trimmings:

Charlotte: Shaded, sculpted silk which blooms in a flower with vintage stamens and various combinations of velvet leaves, French-wired or organza ribbon.

Emily: Slightly more reserved trimming using elements which could include silk, French-wired ribbon, velvet flowers or a unique button.

Anne: Classically simple with a bow of French-belting, French-wired ribbon or hand-dyed silk.

Historic: Precise styles will vary according to the era but can consist of a combination of straw, silk, silk-velvet, vintage lace, silk organza, braid, ribbon, hany-dyed and curled feathers, vintage buttons or special heirloom adornment, such as pins, buckles et cetera, provided by the patron and incorporated into the final design.

Each Wuthering Hat has an interior band of French belting for comfort, sizing and protection of the hat. Each hat is made to your specific head size.

Shapes

I am always developing new shapes and styles but here are a few of the most becoming choices. The following hats are available in knotted-sisol, pari-sisol or fancy sisol:

Picture Hat - a wide stately brim which is the ultimate in both effect and sunshade.

Sun Hat - This brim is short in the back with a gently curving front which is flattering to any face shape. It is extremely easy to wear and provides ample shade. May be made with either a flat derby crown or a round crown.

20's Swoop - This brim is adapted from the flattering lines popular in the 1920's. It is short both in the back and the front with the width emphasized at the sides. It draws attention to and accentuates the beauty of the wearer.

Heart-Back - Similar in the front to the Sun-Hat, but with a pleated back which is reminiscent of a heart.

These styles are available in pari-sisol:

Ruffled-Edge- A very romantic free-form large brim which is edge-dyed in a darker shade. Perfect for brides or attendants.

Small Ruffled-Edge - A free-form narrower brim especially fetching on women with petite or narrow faces.

This hat is a heavier, plain-weave sisol:

Romantic-Derby - A romantic yet funky medium-sized brim which looks great with jeans or dresses. Looks best when edge-dyed with deepening shades of the same color.

Also available are cut-velvet and tapestry cold-weather hats with hand-dyed silk lining, trimmed with French-wired ribbon and beadwork stamens. Colors and fabrics vary, call for current selection.

Colors

Each Wuthering Hat is hand-dyed with many hats combining colors creating a shaded ombre effect. If a color swatch is provided I can usually custom dye a hat to match your special outfit. The colors listed below are the most versatile, but are by no means the only ones available.

Taupe - A neutral which goes well with almost any other color, especially linen.

Moss Green - A beautiful neutral green which is complimented by floral fabrics and is dynamite on redheads.

Des Nimes Blue - designed to blend well with both denim dresses and blue jeans.

Plum - a rich silvery color which handsomely accentuates most skin tones.

Tea-Dye- a warm, pale color that feels like summer sunshine.

Black - always a classic, and looks great with colored trims.

Other possibilities -Peach, Pink, Aqua, Teal, Red, Yellow, Dark Green, Warm Brown, Purple, Ivory, Aged Ochre(has the look of aged, antique straw), Dark Olive et cetera.
