Newton's first law of motion says that an object remains in a state of rest unless a force causes it to move, and an object continues in motion along a straight line unless a force stops it or causes the object to change direction.

Inertia says basically the same thing. Inertia is the tendency of matter to remain at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a force. An example of Inertia or Newton's first law of motion is during a car crash. If a person is not wearing a seatbelt or if the car has no airbags the person can get hurt or even killed. The person's inertia causes this damage. The car is moving and so the person inside the car is also moving with car. When the care suddenly stops or crashes into something the person inside has the tendency to keep on moving forward. If there is no restraint the person in the car will crash into the dashboard because of his tendency to keep on moving.

A person's inertia during a car crash car result in serious damage.
