wizard lake's history

IN 1988 we purchased a 160 acres on the south side of Wizard Lake. The farm is approximately 45 miles south west of Edmonton, Alberta. Mixed farming is the main stay in the area along with many commuters to Edmonton and surrounding towns for employment.

The Wizard Lake immediate area is a recreational, green area, also close to Pigeon Lake, a central Alberta summer hot spot with year round residence.

Being raised on the farm, this move was just down the road from where my Grandparents homesteaded in 1898, and where my Father pioneered. Mixed farming and the family using horse roots run deep in our background. My Grandfather and Father farmed with Draft horses and had many teams. Times gave way to modern farming but there was always a few family horses around.

The Morgan Horse entered our lives by chance in 1984 a mare and gelding both purchased for mountain trail riding, we still have that prized mare and our children are now using and enjoying her. We started to raise and breed the Morgan in 1988 when we purchased the Wizard Lake Morgan Ranch, selecting our prized stallion from the Selks at Claresholm "Porcupine Morgans" along with the purchase of some fine mares from their farm. The Selks have been Morgan breeders since the mid 1950’s, bringing into Alberta some great Stallions like ‘REGY’, ‘SPEEDFIELD’, ‘GAYS CINCO DE MAYO’, ‘SUMMIT’S BARBARIAN’and ‘PRINCECREST STARDON’

Our choice for a stallion came from the great family, show, using type stallion ‘SUMMITS BARBARIAN’ the Selks most prized of all stallions. SUMMIT had a legacy for disposition and sound mind offspring. SUMMIT is the sire to our senior stallion ‘P-CU-P SUM BARIAN’.

Getting to the roots of the Morgan Horse in Alberta was our quest and this was the best place to start. Many long time breeders were great friends with the Selks and we learned valuable information from them all, practicing many of their ideas in our own breeding program today. Getting into the breed has been a real learning experience and acquiring the knowledge of the breed with extensive research into history and pedigrees etc., we love to pass on this valuable information to new Morgan owners.

Our goal here at Wizard Lake Morgans is to pass on the MORGAN MAGIC to anyone who needs a real all-purpose, Family Type Horse. The Versatile Morgan is our life.
