There are few times in this life where we meet someone who has found that "fit" -- that partner who fills the curves to their soul so sweetly it brings joy... and pain to the hearts of those who see it. The joy comes from the selfless love of a friend seeing it, knowing they are complete in each other; the pain comes from experiencing all the more acutely the sorrow that lack in their own life brings. I believe we all seek that fit.... My friend Sam inscribed this poem on my heart through the telling of his life, and his mate, and I had to give voice to it for him... I hope he doesn't mind.

Janet and Sam - you are so blessed in each other... Blessings on you both...

My "Fit"

(A poem for Janet from Sam's heart)

by Kathleen Mathis, 12/98

You fit me.

I've always known it.

From the first time I saw you

walking down the hall

almost thirty years ago.

I had to follow.

Kneeling down beside your desk to ask you out,

my future hung poised

in your assent.

I've known it every day since then.

You fit me.

We fit.

No matter where I've gone

You were with me.

When I've dwelt in the shadows,

when I've lived in the light,

you were there,

a refuge of sanity,

serenity,

balance,

and joy.

You are my roots,

my home,

my whole.

You are the fit

To my soul.

I can't say that every day.

Words

are not the medium I choose

to paint my life.

I live those words,

knowing you are there,

my "fit",

my friend,

my wife.

I love you.

Sam
