Soul's Cry
L. Kathleen Mathis
Outside,
The air is cold,
Enough to freeze my nose
And make my fingernails
Ache
From the wind beating its way
Through my gloves.
There is no moon
In the black and starry sky.
Still,
The wolf throws back his head
To howl
A long and mournful sigh.
And I know why.
I know why.
He cries out for his kindred
To come,
to complete him.
It's not for him to be so
All alone.
He claims the earth,
He claims the sky,
To all who hears,
"This
is mine!"
And warns the terrors in the darkness
To flee.
But the canyon only whispers
The mirror of his sigh,
Breathing out the echo
Of an empty reply.
And so he lifts his head
And howls again
Into the empty sky,
And I know why.
I do know why...
That long and mournful howl
Is mine.
