10/2002 L.A. Radio Flashes. Read Columns & Columnists (C&C) daily if you can. They get most stuff before I do. So does Radio Headlines which are updated instantly. To save space, for example, 6a means 6 a.m., 8p means 8 p.m., & midn means midnight. I'll be on a new schedule the next few months and may not have time for this stuff. Keep checking 'was Columns & Columnists' (C&C) and Radio Headlines yourself for the newest stuff.
10/31.10/02 - "War Of The Worlds on KLAC [570 AM]! KLAC will play a special War of the Worlds tonight October 31st, at 10PM. This is your chance to relive a part of broadcasting history. Don't miss it!" - says their site. It should have been live last night, but they broadcast a game. The original show will be on KNX 1070 AM, 9-10p, tonight.
10/31.9/02 - "Democrats fume as 50 radio hosts broadcast from the White House lawn. The Clinton Administration first pulled this PR stunt in 1993, but the fact that Bush did it just six days before Election Day has Democrats going ballistic." Form www.insideradio.com. Also, another story is linked below.
10/31.8/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM.
10/31.7/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
10/31.6/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/31.5/02 - "FCC chairman Powell urges overhaul of radio airwave policy. WASHINGTON - Radio airwaves increasingly crowded by signals from wireless computers, cellphones and digital broadcasts still have much untapped potential, the nation's top communications regulator said yesterday." More at www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/304/business/FCC_chairman_Powell_urges_overhaul_of_radio_airwave_policy+.shtml. Moreover.com's tip.
10/31.4/02 - "Smiley brings in heavy hitters for show. Tavis Smiley, syndicated Los Angeles radio host and author, speeded through his first live remote show in Atlanta on Wednesday morning at Clark Atlanta University." More at www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/living/buzz/thursday_buzz.html. Larry's tip. He's on NPR locally.
10/31.3/02 - Last night on Art Bell's show the phones didn't work again; no quest, no calls, so they ran an old tape about rockets and stuff. Actually it was more interesting than the planned guest, perhaps rescheduled for tonight. Art plans to cover 'Halloween' topics this week which don't really interest me.
10/31.2/02 - "WABC at crossroads over 'Coast to Coast'. Program director Phil Boyce of WABC (770 AM) says he hasn't decided whether to continue the overnight show "Coast to Coast AM," now heard from 1-5 a.m., after Art Bell leaves at the end of the year." More at www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/ent_radio/story/31428p-29801c.html. Larry's tip. In L.A. Art is on KFI 640 AM.
10/31.1/02 - "WKND FEEDBACK A reader's nightmare. ...What happened to Radio Highlights? There are still a few of us who listen to the radio as well as TV and it's nice to know if there is something special on...." From www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/calwknd/cl-wk-letters31.3oct31.story. From what I've seen they do print many less radio tips since the new format started 10/13.
10/31/02 - "FOR THE RECORD KABC radio -- A Quick Takes item in Wednesday's Calendar mistakenly said that Gloria Allred and Mark Taylor had been hosting a 45-minute show on KABC-AM (790) since the debut of "The Sean Hannity Show" in September 2001. Actually, it was the arrival of "The Radio Factor With Bill O'Reilly" in May that moved them to that morning time slot." From www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-a2-correx31.2oct31.story. Good News: they do print corrections, bad news: they print a lot of corrections. I don't even try to report them.
10/30.12/02 - "War of the Worlds" - story. Beck's show: 5-6p, KLAC 570 AM. See Reminders, above.
10/30.11/02 - www.100000watts.com returns to www.100000watts.com/ says the ctcr bb with a faster server.
10/30.10/02 - "WABC's Hannity Rush-ed to No. 2. ...Now, according to the trade magazine Talkers, the only thing keeping Hannity from being the most-listened-to talk-show host in the entire country is Rush Limbaugh." More at www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/ent_radio/story/31141p-29536c.html. Larry's tip. Hannity should beat Rush, cause I can listen to Hannity, not Rush.
10/30.9/02 - "We take you now (again) to Grovers Mill, N.J.", more on "War of the Worlds." See www.bergen.com/page.php?level_3_id=7&page=5423344. Moreover.com's tip. See Reminders, above.
10/30.8/02 - "White House hosts radio talk shows -- six days before Election Day. White House-AP -- Six days before Election Day, the White House has declared today "Radio Day" -- meaning radio talk show hosts from around the nation have been broadcasting live from the executive mansion." More at home.abc28.com/Global/story.asp?S=992858&nav=5hETC63E. Moreover.com's tip.
10/30.7/02 - "Spotlight set on ethnic groups in TV dramas. The way people from different ethnic backgrounds are portrayed on TV and radio is to be put under scrutiny in Birmingham next month." More at www.blacknet.co.uk/Whats_New_v2.0/Whats_New_v2.0.cgi?v=news&c=Stop_Press&id=103010291438. Moreover.com's tip.
10/30.6/02 - "Digital radio close, not tuned in yet. Crisp, clear, radio may be coming to a station near you, but many local radio listeners will have to wait at least six months or maybe a year, according to local radio stations." More at www.newbernsunjournal.com/Details.cfm?StoryID=5201. Moreover.com's tip.
10/30.5/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. But first - then the good stuff.
10/30.4/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/30.3/02 - "It's Shocking What Rock Listeners Want. Web poll gauges attitudes about edgy content. Some 70% of Rock radio listeners agree with the statement, "Radio personalities should be able to say whatever they please; if people don't want to listen, they can change stations," according to a new web poll..." says R&R.com. Just cause it's such a slow news day.
10/30.2/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #546, dated 10/29/02.
10/30.1/02 - "From 'Everywhere' to Nowhere Man" and more at Randy Dotinga's www.nctimes.com/preview/radio.html, a day early. With stuff like "AM stereo couldn't survive infancy. Beta videotapes and laserdiscs suffered through long, lingering illnesses. Vinyl records? R.I.P. Eight-tracks? Please."
10/30/02 - "KABC's Rantel takes a day job. The voice was familiar but the time of day wasn't. Al Rantel, normally heard weeknights from 7 to 10 on talk station KABC-AM (790), turned up Tuesday between 11 and 11:45 a.m. More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-quick30.1oct30.story. This was reported in yesterdays flashes.
10/29.8/02 - "Internet radio refuses to die. (CNN) -- There was some high drama last week for anyone who cares about Internet radio." More at www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/10/25/hln.hot.buzz.internet.radio/index.html. Larry's tip. Talk about spin.
10/29.7/02 - "Infinity Set To Inform FCC Of L.A. Plans. Sale of one radio station expected soon. "...McClintock tells R&R Infinity is preparing to inform the commission by Nov. 3 of what it intends to do to meet FCC ownership limits in Los Angeles, where the company must divest one of its radio properties..." From R&R.com. That's not what others suggested yesterday.
10/29.6/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM.
10/29.5/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM. Expect bumps for sniper, etc. stuff, especially as H&C beat Larry.
10/29.4/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/29.3/02 - "Teens tune in to radio the least, StatsCan finds. People with higher education listen to CBC the most. OTTAWA — Teenagers listen to radio the least, continuing a trend that goes back 15 years, Statistics Canada says. More at long url. Larry's tip. There have been several such reports in the last few years.
10/29.2/02 - Headlines at laradio.com.
10/29.1/02 - "War of the Worlds" - www.calendarlive.com/tv/radio/cl-et-carney25oct25.story.
10/29/02 - "HD Arrives" and more in Richard Wagoner's Friday column at members.cox.net/rwagoner/. Update: KROQ in L.A. and a station in NYC both broadcast in IBOC/HD radio. See Richard's bb for comments and links.
10/28.11/02 - Most powerful AM station? The subject turned to our KFI at about radio-info.com/boards/ctc/index.cgi?read=14504, the ctcr bb, with other comments. Like, remember the original clear-channel stations?
10/28.10/02 - "Gloria Allred and Mark Taylor leave KABC. More at forums.delphiforums.com/laradio/messages/?msg=89.1, the new L.A. bb. Now it seems you don't need to join to just read the board. P.S. - Their old KABC web page is cashed on Google at Allred & Taylor, long URL.
10/28.9/02 - Today the L.A. Times' list of radio-program tips was longer than since they started their new format on 10/13. Since then, the Sunday list has been much short than usual and at least one Thursday had no tips. These tips are not on their web site for some unknown reason, perhaps because they're often out of date.
10/28.8/02 - Infinity to keep all L.A. stations? "Infinity to petition FCC to keep ALL L.A. Radio Stations...I'm going one step further than the story, top Infinity officals have already met with the FCC and they will get to keep all L.A. stations." More at members3.boardhost.com/scgroove/msg/11950.html, the mostly-music L.A. bb, with other comments.
10/28.7/02 - "Webcaster Group Seeks Grass-Roots Support For SWAA". Voice of Webcasters, the industry group that negotiated the rates for webcast performance royalties that became part of the Small Webcasters Amendment Act, is asking stream listeners to contact their senators and urge them to vote for the SWAA. The bill was passed unanimously by the House, but a last-minute hold placed by Sen. Jesse Helms kept it from being voted on in the Senate before legislators went into recess for next week's midterm elections. The bill will be reintroduced next month..." More at www.radioandrecords.com/.
10/28.6/02 - "Infinity To Tell FCC Of L.A. Plans Within Two Weeks. Company SVP/Communications Dana McClintock tells R&R Infinity is planning to inform the commission by Nov. 3 of its plans for meeting FCC ownership limits in Los Angeles, where the company must divest one of its seven radio stations in order for Viacom to close on its $650 million purchase of KCAL-TV. ...and rumors remain rampant that one of Infinity's L.A. five FMs will be spun off." More at www.radioandrecords.com/Subscribers/TodaysNews/homepage.htm. I did hope it wouldn't be KFWB, one of my least listened to talk stations, except for Larry King. But, KNX does need the help.
10/28.5/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Will be delayed by football till 9:30p-ish.
10/28.4/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
10/28.3/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/28.2/02 - "Web Ready For National Alerts. "This is a test of the Emergency Alert System. This is only a test." Such bulletins have sounded for years on radio and television, with a series of tones." More at my.zacks.com/newsroom/IBD/IBD_comptech2.php3. Moreover.com's tip.
10/28.1/02 - "Internet radio fees threaten college broadcasters. SAN DIEGO - The signal from San Diego State University's KCR station is so weak it can barely be heard on campus - if at all. Yet for the past six years its eclectic programming has reached the entire world." More at www.dailyherald.com/main_story.asp?intid=3755746. Moreover.com's tip. They have a site at kcr.sdsu.edu/, it might be overloaded, and it says they stream.
10/28/02 - Headlines from www.laradio.com/:
10/27.5/02 - A better computer show on Sunday. At noon, switch off Jeff's computer show and try the new one: it's Sunday, noon-1p, KRLA 870 AM, with a site at GMX. Today they were talking about new technology and took fix-it phone calls - while Jeff told people to reinstall Windows. The station's site is at www.newstalk870krla.com/ and they stream.
10/27.4/02 - FYI - European digital is different. Examples from Moreover.com:
10/27.3/02 -FYI - "After 3 days on the air in North Texas, Cafe 990 is no more. Cafe 990 is finished. The company is out of money, all the paychecks bounced, and they're off the air." More at www.radiodailynews.com/990.htm. Larry's tip, but I saw it first on ctcr bb.

10/27.1/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:

Check Time and/or or above for the exact time, or within a few seconds.
10/26.10/02 - FYI - Botswana does reality radio? "Mogami launches radio drama. 10 October, 2002. After being on air for a little over a year, Makgabaneng radio drama has been described as "the drama based on real people, encountering relevant, real-life situations"." More at www.gov.bw/cgi-bin/news.cgi?d=20021010&i=Mogami_launches_radio_drama. Moreover.com's tip. P.S. - Caution - I went to their home page and couldn't back out.
10/26.9/02 - Tom Leykis letters. The LAT printed three letters from readers today concerning the recent Tom Leykis story. All letters were negative. They're all at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-letters26oct26.story. See the 10/18/02 Flash for my link to the original story at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-baker18oct18.story. In a way I should defend LAT - for years they only wrote about NPR shows that bore me or DJs I've never heard of; now they write about this show that only young boys like. At least, I'm glad to see them mix it up.

10/26.3/02 - Bandwidth 'problem'. Dave at www.davesfunstuff.com/0106main.html saw my notice about my bandwidth 'problem' at tripod and suggested a solution. He has had several bandwidth problems in the past, so he knows about them. Dave mentions free.prohosting.com and hostonce.com, and I'll check them out as time allows. And, yes, thanks, I do need help. My budget for this web site has always been zero, and I don't even have a computer.

Fawnskin, California, population 400 -- just across from beautiful Big Bear Lake, is holding their mayoral election November 5..." More at www.radiodailynews.com/krlamayor.htm. Larry's tip. I want to see at least 800 votes for Larry Marino.
10/25.2/02 - "LARP-hosted Web site named Top 10 on the Internet by Time magazine!," headlines laradio.com, but he doesn't give details.
10/25.1/02 - "These days, two 'War of the Worlds' may be scarier than one. The economy was bad, war loomed on the horizon, and Orson Welles thought the nation could use the distraction of a good scary story, a Halloween fiction that terrorized thousands who took it as fact. Now, 64 years later... talk-radio host Glenn Beck...will stage the play live on Wednesday. KLAC-AM (570) is carrying it locally, from 5 to 6 p.m. But over at KNX-AM (1070), Welles' original broadcast...is airing the program Thursday from 9 to 10 p.m. (repeated at 2 a.m. Friday)." 10/24/02 - Art Bell did announce last night that 12/31/02 and into 1/1/03 will be his last regular show. Till then he'll try to do the Wed-Fri shows as his back allows. After that he'll fill in for George, rest his back, hope for a solution to his back problem rather than try an operation on his back. Who knows?
10/23.11/02 - If you have trouble getting to the 100000watts.com web site, try 100kwatts.tmi.net/ says the ctcr bb.
10/23.10/02 - "Art Bell To Leave Radio Show At Year's End Premiere host suffers from debilitating back pain. Art Bell is expected to announce tonight that for the second time in two years he will exit as the host of Premiere Radio Networks' nationally syndicated late-night talk show Coast-To-Coast. 10/23.8/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM. Sniper or other action can bump any show.

10/21.4/02 - FYI - "New AM talk-radio station targets female listeners..." offers the Dallas Morning News, but it requires a long sign in. Moreover.com's tip. Our 710 AM tried to go all women before it went Disney.
10/21.3/02 - More on digital. - Radio free USA. Digital is the new wave, but competition, cost could make some turn a deaf ear. Broadcasters were delighted by the government's decision this month to allow clear-sounding digital radio in the United States, comparing its impact to the monumental shift from black-and-white television to color." 10/19.3/02 - "The agonies of a long commute. Sometimes, the more I know, the less I want to know. I think that's why I haven't replaced the car antenna that broke last February. Peace and quiet was restored to my drives. I could have accomplished the same goal by simply turning the radio off, but that is a tall order for an information junkie." More at www.latimes.com/news/local/pilot/columnists/la-dpt-smith19oct19.story.
10/19.2/02 - FYI - "She Holds the Cards in Copyright Fight. An official in an obscure agency will help define 'fair use' in the digital age. 10/19.1/02 - "Webcasters Saved From High Royalties. Legislative relief stalls in the Senate, but record labels give small Internet stations a break by deferring most of what is owed them. Record companies agreed Friday to defer most of the royalties they're owed by small Internet radio broadcasters after Congress failed to pass a bill authorizing a discount for those stations." In response to the tremendous interest in the original 10-part Yiddish Radio Project series, we continue with a 26-week, Web-exclusive festival of Yiddish radio. This week, we present the third of five special shows featuring the radio melodrama Men Without Eyes -- the bittersweet story of a beautiful teenage girl struck by tragedy." More at www.npr.org/programs/atc/features/2002/yiddish/index.html.
10/18.12/02 - Nevermind. "GrooveRadio.com website has been updated and it looks like steaming shall begin shortly!!!" - or so said a posting on the Groove bb on C&C. 10/18.11/02 - "Buckley's top engineer says iBiquity's AM digital system works fine," comments www.insideradio.com/. This counters the several who suggest IBOC AM had a night-time problem. Also, recently, audio quality has come into question. But, who is Buckley?
10/18.10/02 - "Los Angeles among first to test digital radio. 10/18/2002 By BRIAN BERGSTEIN THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. Broadcasters were delighted by the government's decision this month to allow clear-sounding digital radio in the United States, comparing its impact to the monumental shift from black-and-white television to color. But digital radio's path toward popularity doesn't figure to be as easy. Los Angeles is among the markets in which digitally enhanced broadcasts will be first available--one of the nation's most competitive broadcast markets. The technology faces heavy competition in an increasingly crowded field of digital entertainment. And new digital receivers will cost $75 or $100 more than traditional radios at first, making it uncertain whether many people beyond audiophiles and high-end car companies will be interested." More at www.pe.com/localnews/statenews/stories/PENEWSSTATEdigradio1018.cfbb1407.html, but requires long sign up; try AP. Moreover.com's tip. Remember, one L.A. station already broadcasts in IBOC.

More at www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,55757,00.html, and it's two pages. LPFM also. Larry's tip.

10/18.5/02 - "Webcaster Royalty Measure Stalls in the Senate. The bill, said to have been blocked by Sen. Helms, would have slashed payments to labels and artists. A bill designed to save small Internet radio stations from bankruptcy foundered Thursday, failing to win final approval from the Senate before lawmakers adjourned until after the November elections. 10/18/02 - "The mouth of misogyny. Who needs Howard Stern when L.A. has its own Tom Leykis? You don't usually get congratulated on Tom Leykis' syndicated radio show unless you're, say, a caller describing the way you talked your unexpectedly pregnant girlfriend into having an abortion -- and then dumped her." More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-baker18oct18.story. Surely, even young boys can see through this junk.
10/17.13/02 - The Los Angeles Times Radio Tips for Today in the Sunday 10/13 paper totaled only 20 tips; fewer than usual. Since Sunday it does look like radio coverage has decreased. Their tips are not on their web site but should be.
10/17.12/02 - More on the IBOC digital radio problem. See radio-info.com/boards/ctc/index.cgi?read=14144 on the ctcr bb, with a sound sample.
10/17.11/02 - "Another thing about DAB -- get used to a 10 second processing delay" and "Radio and TV groups are quietly talking about what happens when cross-ownership is okay;" two comments at insideradio.com, without details. Is 'DAB' the new IBOC digital radio, to be known as 'HD radio,' or something.
10/17.10/02 - Are the 10/02 Spanish Arbitron ratings correct? Insideradio.com says, "Arbitron schedules a "big meeting" with its Los Angeles Spanish radio clients next month. No surprise about the reason: The pronounced drops in the new Summer book by stations like KSCA, KLAX, KLVE and KXOL which Inside Radio reported earlier this week. Arbitron CEO Steve Morris tells analysts this morning that they've reviewed the Summer numbers and found "no aberration in the way the sample was placed." Were L.A. Hispanics spending more time with Anglo stations?"

10/17.8/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
10/17.7/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for next week (Fr-Th) are at www.laweekly.com/calendar/content/radio_all.phppicks. Notice they list early morning shows where you'd expect to see evening shows for the previous day. Also, some occur before my daily postings.
10/17.6/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/17.5/02 - The Los Angeles Downtown News, which sometimes mentions radio, revised their search function. Or, rather fixed it; it hasn't worked well all year. I haven't had time to check 'radio' yet, but try it at www.downtownnews.com/. Do limit the dates if you just want new news.
10/17.4/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #544, dated 10/16/02. They distribute it by email before they post it on their site. Why? Today: digital radio, FCC, and more.
10/17.3/02 - For the Riverside/San Bernadino area , radio Dave says, "KHPY Moving to 1670 AM (October 16, 2002). From Amwar Washington: I've just got an update from KHPY, they say it will move from 1530am to 1670am, but they'll be on the air at the end of October, they got hi-tech gadgets and expanding their airwaves to los angeles and orange counties, they'll be on the air 24 hours a day, they'll be no 7am-5pm, just 24 hours now. KSUL is coming back as KHPY but it'll be on 1670am." That's from www.davesfunstuff.com/0100main.html.
10/17.2/02 - "Halloween radio events planned" and "Intern in cahoots with listener to fix station contest. FCC involved" headlines laradio.com, but I don't have any details yet.
10/17.1/02 - "KGB veteran jockey McInnes out of job," ratings, and more in Randy Dotinga's Thursday radio column at www.nctimes.com/preview/radio.html.
10/17/02 - "My Favorite Weekend: Big Boy. The pastimes of radio's Power monger. He's the salty morning mouth of the Southland's most popular radio station, Power 106 (KPWR-FM), and the featured player in the most outrageous parodies of movie ads to ever grace an L.A. billboard." More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/calwknd/cl-wk-fav17oct17.story.
10/16.7/02 - Another L.A. message board at forums.delphiforums.com/laradio. "ON THE AIR: Los Angeles - A place for broadcasting pros and people interested in radio to meet, discuss, debate, gossip, spread news, rumors, etc. about radio stations in and around Los Angeles." But, it looks like you'll need to register to post, like the linking site in the 10/16.6/02 Flash.
10/16.6/02 - Karel in S.F. says a bb: "One old favorite I ran into on the dial is Karel Bouleyn (ex-KFI). He's now doing fill-ins at the Lgendary KGO/810* in San Francisco." Also, "I liked hearing Karel and Andrew. I miss hearing Karel. He was always so polite to everyone (you don't hear that a lot on the Talk Radio Circuit...)" From http://groups.msn.com/losangelesradio/_homepage.msnw?pgmarket=en-us
10/16.5/02 - "Radioio, an internet only top forty radio station out of Florida came in number one in the Internet only radio station ratings issued just moments ago by Measurecast." And more, says insideradio.com. See www.radioio.com/ and www.measurecast.com/ where it looks like #5.
10/16.4/02 - "Early Clearance Given To 146 More LPFMs. The applications were filed during the FCC's June 11-15, 2001 filing window and have been accepted for filing by the commission, the first step in the process of acquiring a construction permit for a new low-power FM station." More at R&R.com. But, remember, L.A. won't get any.
10/16.3/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Don't miss 'Have Gun.' But first:
10/16.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:

10/16/02 - "Airplay Raises Disclosure Issue. Some say FM station Power 106 should tell listeners about its ties to a rapper receiving heavy exposure. The station's owner denies conflict of interest." More at www.calendarlive.com/tv/cl-fi-emmis16oct16.story.
10/15.6/02 - Los Angeles Times new format started Sunday. Monday's 'In the Know' column which usually never mentions radio did just mention a station. The 'Morning Report' column, which was Tue-Sat and only occasionally mentioned radio, looks like it was replaced with a 'Quick Takes' column which didn't mention radio. The 'Radio Tips of Today' listing, usually every day, had 13 tips on Mon and eight tips on Tues, even less than usual. More as it happens. P.S. - I'll need to build new searches on C&C. Also, Tips never has been listed on their web site.
10/15.5/02 - Are L.A. Spanish-radio ratings incorrect? Inside Radio says: "More on the drop in Spanish radio shares in L.A. -- Spanish operators await the release of MaxiMiser data tomorrow. One expert wonders whether Arbitron's Summer sample included fewer "Spanish language-dominant" diaries -- making wobbles more likely." From the groove bb.
10/15.4/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM.
10/15.3/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
10/15.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/15.1/02 - "Lycan Leaves the Register, But... MOVIN' ON Today's column marks the end of a 40-year career with The Orange County Register. I will continue to write this column as a free-lancer while exploring other media opportunities. It's been a fun ride, but it's time to move on to the next adventure. You'll still find your radio news here each Sunday." So says San Diego radio Dave on 10/13 but he doesn't give a source.
10/15/02 - "KFI #1 with Adults 18+" and "Gary Lycan departs Orange County Register after 40 years. He'll continue radio column" headlines laradio.com. I don't know where Gary will be, but I'll look.
10/14/02 - holiday for some
10/13.6/02 - The Los Angeles Times (LAT) revised their newspaper format today. A few radio tips for today are still in the Calendar section, now printed on full-sized pages and in two sections. These daily radio tips don't appear on their web site; a mistake. More as I get it.
10/13.5/02 - Talk continues about IBOC digital radio. Check the message boards on C&C.

10/13.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
10/13.1/02 - New host at KFI 4-7p, Sunday. Other hosts mentioned his name and said he was good, but it wasn't anyone I recognized.
10/13/02 - Gary Lycan Sunday radio column is on the OCR web site. Go to OCR and click Columns; under Shows click Radio. Or, this week it's at www2.ocregister.com/ocrweb/ocr/article.do?id=6828. Remember, laradio.com suggested he's leaving the paper.
10/12.8/02 - Rabbi Mentz's cashed web pages. Likewise, Rabbi Mentz's pages were deleted from KFI's site, but Google's cashed pages are at long url. Last Sunday, Gary Lycan reported KFI let the rabbi go - "Robin Bertolucci told him that his "sound does not fit the station.""
10/12.7/02 - Mario Martinoli's KABC site pages have been removed from KABC, but Google's cached pages are available at lone url, for a while. He did their restaurant show, about the best of the restaurant shows and one of KABC's best shows. I don't know why he left, yet or if he has other links, yet. He also does/did stuff on K CAL channel 9 TV.
10/12.6/02 - More comments on the digital radio 'problem' are at radio-info.com/boards/ctc/index.cgi?read=13956, the ctcr bb.

More at www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,55706,00.html. Larry's tip. But, satellite does work at night, right?
10/12.2/02 - NYC area to have tallest antenna tower? "Broadcasters ponder Bayonne tower. An old military ocean terminal in Bayonne, N.J., has emerged as the leading contending site for a new regional broadcast tower. Local broadcasters are still holding out a tiny hope that New York City will offer a spot for what would be the tallest tower in the world, at 2,000 feet. But..." More at www.crainsny.com/news.cms?newsId=4351. Larry's tip.
10/12.1/02 - Arbitron ratings - "Eminem Keeps 106 in Power. Rapper's hit CD also boosts other outlets in the Arbitron ratings. Spanish-language radio exec decries polling method for his stations. Hip-hop outlet Power 106 retained its top spot...while Spanish-language station KSCA-FM plunged from second to eighth...according to figures released Friday by the Arbitron ratings service...while talk station KFI-AM (640) jumped from fourth to second in the morning, with Bill Handel's audience share increasing from 4.5% to 5.5%."
