10/31.10/02 - "War Of The Worlds on KLAC [570 AM]! KLAC will play a special War of the Worlds tonight October 31st, at 10PM. This is your chance to relive a part of broadcasting history. 10/31.9/02 - "Democrats fume as 50 radio hosts broadcast from the White House lawn. The Clinton Administration first pulled this PR stunt in 1993, but the fact that Bush did it just six days before Election Day has Democrats going ballistic." Form www.insideradio.com. Also, another story is linked below.

  • "MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC Nic Harcourt spins music that all sounds the same on L.A.'s favorite morning show. Today's guest: Norwegian singer Sondre Lerche live from the Museum of Television and Radio in NYC (at 11 a.m.) KCRW 89.9 FM, 9-noon."

10/31.5/02 - "FCC chairman Powell urges overhaul of radio airwave policy. WASHINGTON - Radio airwaves increasingly crowded by signals from wireless computers, cellphones and digital broadcasts still have much untapped potential, the nation's top communications regulator said yesterday." More at www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/304/business/FCC_chairman_Powell_urges_overhaul_of_radio_airwave_policy+.shtml. Moreover.com's tip.

10/31.4/02 - "Smiley brings in heavy hitters for show. Tavis Smiley, syndicated Los Angeles radio host and author, speeded through his first live remote show in Atlanta on Wednesday morning at Clark Atlanta University." More at www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/living/buzz/thursday_buzz.html. Larry's tip. He's on NPR locally.

10/31.3/02 - Last night on Art Bell's show the phones didn't work again; no quest, no calls, so they ran an old tape about rockets and stuff. Actually it was more interesting than the planned guest, perhaps rescheduled for tonight. Art plans to cover 'Halloween' topics this week which don't really interest me.

10/31.2/02 - "WABC at crossroads over 'Coast to Coast'. Program director Phil Boyce of WABC (770 AM) says he hasn't decided whether to continue the overnight show "Coast to Coast AM," now heard from 1-5 a.m., after Art Bell leaves at the end of the year." From www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/calwknd/cl-wk-letters31.3oct31.story. From what I've seen they do print many less radio tips since the new format started 10/13.

10/31/02 - "FOR THE RECORD KABC radio -- A Quick Takes item in Wednesday's Calendar mistakenly said that Gloria Allred and Mark Taylor had been hosting a 45-minute show on KABC-AM (790) since the debut of "The Sean Hannity Show" in September 2001. Actually, it was the arrival of "The Radio Factor With Bill O'Reilly" in May that moved them to that morning time slot." From www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-a2-correx31.2oct31.story. Good News: they do print corrections, bad news: they print a lot of corrections. I don't even try to report them.

More at www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/ent_radio/story/31141p-29536c.html. Larry's tip. Hannity should beat Rush, cause I can listen to Hannity, not Rush.

10/30.9/02 - "We take you now (again) to Grovers Mill, N.J.", more on "War of the Worlds." See www.bergen.com/page.php?level_3_id=7&page=5423344. Moreover.com's tip. See Reminders, above.

10/30.7/02 - "Spotlight set on ethnic groups in TV dramas. The way people from different ethnic backgrounds are portrayed on TV and radio is to be put under scrutiny in Birmingham next month." More at www.blacknet.co.uk/Whats_New_v2.0/Whats_New_v2.0.cgi?v=news&c=Stop_Press&id=103010291438. Moreover.com's tip.

  • column - www2.ocregister.com/ocrweb/ocr/article.do?id=8900§ion=SHOW&year=2002&month=10&day=27.
  • Program schedule - www2.ocregister.com/ocrweb/ocr/article.do?id=8888§ion=SHOW&year=2002&month=10&day=27
  • This week a search for his name found both columns. The OCR had not yet updated the index for their paper. Still nothing about his leaving.

10/26.11/02 - Time - Fall back tonight. "Don't forget to fall back! Daylight-saving time ends Sunday morning at 2am, so remember to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to sleep Saturday night," www.radioandrecords.com/ reminds us. Check Time and/or or above for the exact time, or within a few seconds.

10/26.10/02 - FYI - Botswana does reality radio? "Mogami launches radio drama. 10 October, 2002. After being on air for a little over a year, Makgabaneng radio drama has been described as "the drama based on real people, encountering relevant, real-life situations"." More at www.gov.bw/cgi-bin/news.cgi?d=20021010&i=Mogami_launches_radio_drama. Moreover.com's tip. P.S. - Caution - I went to their home page and couldn't back out.

10/26.9/02 - Tom Leykis letters. The LAT printed three letters from readers today concerning the recent Tom Leykis story. All letters were negative. They're all at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-letters26oct26.story. See the 10/18/02 Flash for my link to the original story at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-baker18oct18.story. 10/18.10/02 - "Los Angeles among first to test digital radio. 10/18/2002 By BRIAN BERGSTEIN THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. Broadcasters were delighted by the government's decision this month to allow clear-sounding digital radio in the United States, comparing its impact to the monumental shift from black-and-white television to color. But digital radio's path toward popularity doesn't figure to be as easy. Los Angeles is among the markets in which digitally enhanced broadcasts will be first available--one of the nation's most competitive broadcast markets. The technology faces heavy competition in an increasingly crowded field of digital entertainment. And new digital receivers will cost $75 or $100 more than traditional radios at first, making it uncertain whether many people beyond audiophiles and high-end car companies will be interested." Is 'DAB' the new IBOC digital radio, to be known as 'HD radio,' or something.

10/17.10/02 - Are the 10/02 Spanish Arbitron ratings correct? Insideradio.com says, "Arbitron schedules a "big meeting" with its Los Angeles Spanish radio clients next month. No surprise about the reason: The pronounced drops in the new Summer book by stations like KSCA, KLAX, KLVE and KXOL which Inside Radio reported earlier this week. Arbitron CEO Steve Morris tells analysts this morning that they've reviewed the Summer numbers and found "no aberration in the way the sample was placed." Were L.A. Hispanics spending more time with Anglo stations?"

10/17.5/02 - The Los Angeles Downtown News, which sometimes mentions radio, revised their search function. Or, rather fixed it; it hasn't worked well all year. I haven't had time to check 'radio' yet, but try it at www.downtownnews.com/. Do limit the dates if you just want new news.

10/17.4/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #544, dated 10/16/02. They distribute it by email before they post it on their site. Why? Today: digital radio, FCC, and more.

10/17.3/02 - For the Riverside/San Bernadino area , radio Dave says, "KHPY Moving to 1670 AM (October 16, 2002). From Amwar Washington: I've just got an update from KHPY, they say it will move from 1530am to 1670am, but they'll be on the air at the end of October, they got hi-tech gadgets and expanding their airwaves to los angeles and orange counties, they'll be on the air 24 hours a day, they'll be no 7am-5pm, just 24 hours now. 10/16.7/02 - Another L.A. message board at forums.delphiforums.com/laradio. "ON THE AIR: Los Angeles - A place for broadcasting pros and people interested in radio to meet, discuss, debate, gossip, spread news, rumors, etc. about radio stations in and around Los Angeles." But, it looks like you'll need to register to post, like the linking site in the 10/16.6/02 Flash.

10/16.6/02 - Karel in S.F. says a bb: "One old favorite I ran into on the dial is Karel Bouleyn (ex-KFI). He's now doing fill-ins at the Lgendary KGO/810* in San Francisco." Also, "I liked hearing Karel and Andrew. I miss hearing Karel. He was always so polite to everyone (you don't hear that a lot on the Talk Radio Circuit...)" From http://groups.msn.com/losangelesradio/_homepage.msnw?pgmarket=en-us

10/16.5/02 - "Radioio, an internet only top forty radio station out of Florida came in number one in the Internet only radio station ratings issued just moments ago by Measurecast." And more, says insideradio.com. See www.radioio.com/ and www.measurecast.com/ where it looks like #5.

10/16.4/02 - "Early Clearance Given To 146 More LPFMs. The applications were filed during the FCC's June 11-15, 2001 filing window and have been accepted for filing by the commission, the first step in the process of acquiring a construction permit for a new low-power FM station." More at R&R.com. But, remember, L.A. won't get any.

10/15.6/02 - Los Angeles Times new format started Sunday. Monday's 'In the Know' column which usually never mentions radio did just mention a station. The 'Morning Report' column, which was Tue-Sat and only occasionally mentioned radio, looks like it was replaced with a 'Quick Takes' column which didn't mention radio. The 'Radio Tips of Today' listing, usually every day, had 13 tips on Mon and eight tips on Tues, even less than usual. More as it happens. P.S. - I'll need to build new searches on C&C. Also, Tips never has been listed on their web site.

10/15.5/02 - Are L.A. Spanish-radio ratings incorrect? Inside Radio says: "More on the drop in Spanish radio shares in L.A. -- Spanish operators await the release of MaxiMiser data tomorrow. Most shows are very good, but my very favorites are marked with an *. "Have Gun, Will Travel," perhaps my most favorite show, was one of the last radio Westerns, and one of the few shows that started on TV and went to radio. Types of shows: C is comedy, D is drama, P is police, PI is private investigator-like, SF is sci fi, and W is western.

  • Mon - " Gunsmoke" (W)* & "Tales Of The Texas Rangers" (W) Delayed by football, try 9:30-ish.
  • Tue - "[Yours Truly,] Johnny Dollar" (PI)* & "Dragnet" (L.A. P)
  • Wed - 8p: "60 Minutes II (TV news) - 9p: "Have Gun, Will Travel" (W)*+ & "X Minus 1" (SF)*+
