Most engines rank web pages by giving the highest priority to the contents
of the TITLE tag.
If the contents of your title tag exactly matches the
search phrase, the chances are you will be ranked right at the top. Maybe even
as the #1.
It is important to have the most important keywords in the TITLE
tag. But the title should be descriptive since this is often the only
indication the search engine gives as to the content of the page. And
the length of the TITLE tag should be less than 80 characters. (Netscape displays
only the first 66 character of the title tag).
Text towards the top of the page are given next highest priority while text
towards the bottom are given a low priority. Words that occur frequently are
ranked higher but very common words like the, a, be, is etc are
ignored.
If your page contains words that are uncommon in the search engine's data base your page will be ranked very higly with searches using these keywords.
meta tags can sometimes be used to improve your
ranking. But many engines asign them a low priority and a few tend to
ignore them completely.
