 UNICEF officer cites Capiz women ROXAS CITY -- An officer of the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) in the Philippines has commended local community volunteer health workers for their contribution to the pursuit of the Fifth Country Programme for Children (CPC) in Capiz. CPC V Focal for Capiz Dr. Gepke Hingst said he was heartened to know that there are so many capable women volunteers in the province who could collaborate with other government agencies in pushing the UNICEF program. Hingst visited Capiz recently to look into the activities of Health and Nutrition Posts and Day Care Centers as local components of CPC V. Health is one of the areas supported by UNICEF through CPC V in three pilot municipalities in the province, namely Pontevedra, Panitan and Dumalag. The program also has extension areas in the province. She also assessed the extent to which the community volunteer health workers are manning the posts as centers for the delivery of basic health services for children and mothers. The health and nutrition posts are put up by local government units with the support of the Department of Health and the Provincial Health Office. The UNICEF program introduces interventions that are meant to enhance the service capability of the said facilities. Hingst also visited Day Care Centers to ascertain the status of their activities in line with CPC V. Included in Hingst's recent visit were health and nutrition posts and Day Care Centers in Pontevedra and Mambusao, a CPC V extension area. Her visit was capped by a meeting with the CPC V Provincial Technical Working Group led by Engr. Connie Fagtanan, CPC V Provincial Coordinator and OIC-Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator. Various basic health services are offered at the health and nutrition posts including maternal and childcare, immunization, medical consultations, pre-natal check-ups, health education and others. Personnel of the Municipal Health Office visit the posts regularly to render services. Many of the volunteer health workers have been working at the posts for quite a number of years as a form of public service to their own barangays or communities.
