What does the Bible say about slavery?

1. Slaves are told to obey their master:
"Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the
flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto
Christ" (Ephesians 6:5).

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not
with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing
God” (Colossians 3:22).

“Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please
them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but
shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our
Savior in all things” (Titus 2:9-10).

"All slaves 'under the yoke' must have unqualified respect for their
masters, so that the name of God and our teaching are not brought into
disrepute. Slaves whose masters are believers are not to think any
the less of them because they are brothers; on the contrary, they
should serve them all the better, since those who have the benefits
of their services are believers and dear to God." (I Tim. 6:1-2)

"Slaves must be respectful and obedient to their masters, not only
when they are kind and gentle but also when they are unfair. "
(1 Peter 2:18).

2. Many erroneously believe slaves had to be freed in the Old
Testament after serving for seven years. This was only for Jewish
slaves. Pagan slaves could be kept forever:

“Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you,
of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which
they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye
shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to
inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever"
(Leviticus 25:44-46).

3. God Himself in favor of slavery:

I will sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they
will sell them to the Sabeans, a nation far away.` The LORD has
spoken. (Joel 3:8).

“And when the Lord thy God hath delivered [a city] into thine hands,
thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But
the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the
city, even the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou
shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath
given thee” (Deuteronomy 20:13-14).

"A thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he
must be sold to pay for his theft. (Ex 22.3)

The Fourth and Tenth Commandments also recognize slavery, especially
the Tenth which emphasizes that others should not covet a man's male
and female slaves!

4. Opinions of schlars.
"Slavery was incorporated into the civil institutions of Moses; it was
recognized accordingly by Christ and his apostles." -- Rev. Dr. Nathan
Lord, President of Dartmouth College.

The Rev. Dr. Wilbur Fisk, president of Wesleyan University, says: "The
New Testament enjoins obedience upon the slave as an obligation due to
a present rightful authority."

5. My conclusion.
Since slavery is immoral, the Bible clearly supports an evil
institution and should most definately NOT be used to decide what is
right or wrong!
