In the early 1990s, I entered a phase of whirlwind travel while continuing to work at a variety of social service agencies. I visited Malaysia, England, Germany, Singapore, Guatamala, Italy, Greece, the Soviet Union, Norway, Japan, Indonesia, and other countries. During this period, Pan Am entered bankruptcy and offered amazing discounts during the airline's dying days. In addition to redeeming frequent flier miles, I traveled as a courier, delivering corporate packages in exchange for free airfare.
I've always been friendly, so meeting local families in each country was easy.
