Extremely powerful imaging software. Be aware that this
is an alpha release. It is freely available for downloading as three separate
files. It does have some problems reading some FITS formats but this can
be circumvented by first converting into a .dib format. This imaging software
is useful not only for astronomy but any scientific work.
Your Sky makes custom maps of the sky for any location
on Earth and any date from 4713
B.C. into the distant future. Maps can include stars as faint as magnitude
6.5, constellation
names, outlines, and boundaries, the Moon and planets, deep sky objects
from a database of
more than 500, and a comet or asteroid whose position is calculated
from its orbital
elements. A variety of display options allow customising the map for
its intended use.
What better way to protect your monitor's phosphor than by smashing
rocks into it at dozens
of kilometres per second? This directory contains a Windows screen
saver named "Craters"
which simulates cratering of initially flat terrain, obeying the same
power-law relating crater
size to number observed on airless solar system bodies. Ready-to-use
screen savers for both
Windows 3.x and Windows 95 and complete source code are available for
downloading.
This site provides a list of zip files that are contained in the SimTel/win3/astronomy
sub directory. A very convenient place to find what you need with quick
download times.
. Home Planet Release 3 is supplied in two editions. The "Lite" edition
is intended for users who wish to evaluate the program and for casual users.
It includes all of the functionality described above and has no accuracy
or feature limitations, but in order to reduce download time and to be
able to fit on a single 1.4 megabyte diskette, contains smaller databases
(for example, only the brightest 7000 stars instead of 256,000, and an
720×360 pixel map of the Earth rather than one with twice that resolution.
The Lite edition does not include the collection of images of astronomical
objects present in the full version. The Lite edition is less than 1.5
megabytes in size. The "Full" version of Home Planet includes everything
in the Lite edition, plus the larger databases, images, and sound files,
which increase the size of the download to more than 7 megabytes--more
than many people are comfortable downloading on dial-up connections. If
you've downloaded the Lite edition and later wish to upgrade to the Full
package, there is a Home Planet upgrade kit available which contains only
the components of the Full package omitted from the Lite edition. Home
Planet is in the public domain; it is free software. It is not shareware--you
don't have to register it or pay anybody, and the version you download
is fully functional as soon as you install it. You are free to give copies
to your friends, post it on other systems, and otherwise use and distribute
it in any way without permission, restriction, attribution, or compensation
of any kind. This is a killer program!
Now you never need to go outside again! This directory contains a Windows
screen saver
that shows the sky as it presently appears including stars from the
more than 9000 star Yale
Bright Star Catalogue, the Sun, Moon (with the correct phase), and
planets, deep sky
objects drawn from a database of more than 500 prominent objects including
all Messier
objects, constellation names, boundaries, and outlines, and ecliptic
and equatorial
co-ordinates. All of these items can be individually selected to customise
the display. The
screen saver can be configured for any time zone and any location on
Earth. This program is
based on the more comprehensive star map window of Home Planet, adapted
to be a
self-contained and well-behaved screen saver. Like Home Planet, this
program is in the
public domain.
Short programs that can be easily modified to meet your
personal needs and preferences. These are single purpose programs; they
are designed to perform single tasks. The code is not compiled so it is
easy to see the way the code and the program work. Appropriate for middle
and high school.
This site harbors perhaps the most complete selection of
astronomy freeware and shareware that you will find on the web. Be prepared
for a long and fruitful visit.
a very large library of shareware / freeware / public domain software
for education. Our collection includes software for every grade level (pre
K - 12th grade) and subject matter. Operating systems include Windows,
Macintosh, Apple II and MS DOS.
An interactive Java applet which illustrates how orbits around compact
objects such as
neutron stars and black holes depart drastically from Kepler's laws,
and explains why.
Source code for the applet is available.
Exploration in Education (ExInEd) is a NASA-supported program
of the Special Studies Office (SSO) of the Space Telescope Science Institute.
The ExInEd program, headed by Dr. Robert A. Brown, was established to explore
new ways to derive social benefit from our space program by communicating
its attendant ideas and results. ExInEd uses technology to overcome the
time lag and information barriers that keep fresh research results from
reaching wide audiences. In one facet of its program, ExInEd develops new
types of electronic publications that combine the aesthetic benefits of
traditional hard-cover copy with the flexibility and interactivity of electronic
data, including audio and full-color video. ExInEd welcomes the expanded
information networks that are enabling better, faster, less expensive,
and easier-to-use methods of conveying the information and excitement of
space activities to broad audiences.
Solar System Live, an interactive orrery for the Web, lets
you view the solar system in a
variety of ways for any date between 4713 B.C. and A.D. 8000. An ephemeris
can be
displayed for any location on Earth and, given orbital elements in
the form published in the
IAU Circulars, the orbit and position of asteroids and comets can be
plotted.
A very nice source for software for Mac and Windows. Good program descriptions
and hints for effective use. There is also a nice list of additional sites
for Free Astronomy Software.
This is a extensive list of anonymous ftp file servers containing astronomy
and space research related material. You will find included only those
servers containing special sub directories for astro stuff or much material
included into a general directories. If you are a teacher of advanced topics,
this may be an ideal site for you.
MyStars! is a scientifically rigorous, yet simple and educational Windows
astronomy program that helps you visualize and locate the positions of
stars, planets, comets, minor planets, and Messier (M) objects from any
location on earth and any date/time. Features: Optional 32 Bit, Multi-lingual
Installer, Orrery, Printing, Full Screen View, Help, Images, Zoom In/Out,
Object tracking and Animation. Star & Constellation. Names, Constellation
