One year ago Linux was an operating system only user and known by hackers and developers.
Now many PC users are talking about it. If you haven't heard of it yet, it's time.
Linux is a very flexible OS. You can install it on a i386 or i486 without any problems
(it will be just a little slow). With Linux you usually get many free applications with
it, like a firewall, proxy server, SMP, DNS, different desktop layouts, etc.. If you
have seen the last "Titanic" movie you may have been impressed by the excellent computer
animation. It has been done with several Alpha Computers with a Linux cluster running
from floppy. Imagine this with any other operating system.
Whatever you demand from your system Linux will do it (apart from some multimedia stuff you get under Windows95/98). But bee warned, Linux is not easy to handle. It's not a "play around till it is working" Operating System like Windows or OS/2. You really got to read the HOWTOs otherwise you will not be able to get your system to run as you want. Furthermore you still work a lot with commands instead of "clicking" around. I would advise Linux to people who know what to do or to small (maybe ever large) businesses. |
