Here I have some interesting stuff for Computer users. Many people
especially IT professionals are using Windows but are not very fond
of it. But Windows gave us a few advantage. First of all just think back
to the times when you had hundreds of different Operating systems and just
think of the masses of software you can get for windows. And what would
be multimedia without Windows.
Still there are alternatives to Windows. IBM's OS/2 WARP for example. Even though OS/2 is almost dead you still get a lot of banks and insurances using it. The reason is simple, you get good security, it is easy to use, it also is fairly stable and compatible with DOS and win16. But for how long are you going to get OS/2. IBM stopped the support for end users in June '98 and there will be no support for WARP 5 code name Aurora (release, May '99). A newer Idea but still not that new is Linux. Developed at the early 1990s it only became popular in '98. Linux is a Unix based operating system which is more and more leaning on the POSIX code. Linux is a free OS, not free as in money but free as in thought. You get it in different flavours through the distribution. In Europe S.u.S.E. is quite popular but in Northern America it is RedHat and Caldera. You may be surprised but some of the big Hardware manufacturers will provide Linux preloads on there PCs by the end of '99. |
