M.Tech Project Work (2005):

“GAS TURBINE COMBUSTION SYSTEM, DESIGN, ANALYSIS, VALIDATION

USING FINITE ELIMENT TECHNIQUES”

Synopsis:

The design of gas turbine combustion system is a complex process involving fluid dynamics, combustion and mechanical design. For many years the combustion system was much less amenable to theoretical treatment then other components than other components of gas turbine, and any development program required a considerable amount of trial and error. With the very high cycle temperature of modern gas turbines, mechanical design remains difficult. The rapidly increasing use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in recent years had a major impact on the design process, greatly increasing the understanding of complex flow and hence reducing the amount of trial and error required.

The problem involved in the design of combustion system is basically one of the reaching the best compromise between number of conflicting requirements which will vary widely with different applications. Aircraft and ground based gas turbine combustion differ in some respects and are similar in others.

The major objectives of the present work are:

1.      To carryout a comprehensively literature survey on different types of combustion systems, the material used in their development, the design philosophy adopted etc.

2.      To propose a systematic design analysis and validation procedure using finite element techniques.

3.      To compare the obtained results with the reported ones available in the literature.

The front end commercial software ANSYS 5.4 is used in the design validation process.
