One of my favourite offerings from the Ekco stable the EKCO AC85 which dates from 1934 ......

ekcoa23b.jpg

I particularly like the shape and flowing lines of this receiver, in my opinion classic Deco at it's best, I was lucky enough to win this set on an internet auction site, thankfully for me not as well advertised as possibly it could have been...the magical word Ekco was omitted !!!! Must admit I was on tenderhooks when this set was transported across England to me, but the seller had done an excellent job on the packaging ! I'm unable to ascertain if this beauty works as yet as so far I have been unable to obtain a correct power lead.

For the technical minded, details as follows The Ekco AC85 receiver was made in 1934 by E.K.Cole Ltd, this set was a precursor to the famous round Ekco designs credited to Wells Coates. This particular set I am led to believe came from another famous designer of the time Serge Chermayeff and incorporated the same chassis as the now famous " Dougal " set by the same company. 5v R, AC SHet Table Model, MW/LW Mtrs / StN, came in a choice of brown mottled bakelite or black bakelite with chrome trimmings. Measurements 12 1/2 in x 21 in x 9 1/2 in. Cost £13 - 13s - 0d. A battery operated version was also available at £13 - 2s - 6d.

An optional sturdy wooden stand could also be purchased, priced £1 - 9s - 6d.
