Covenanting Families

Elizabeth Hutchison wife of William Farqhuar in Auchencross

Probably related to Thomas Hutchison and Hugh Hutchison of Dalgig (and later Fardenreoch) . Hugh escaped capture by Dragoons after the martyrdom of  Wilson, Jamieson and Humphry on Corsegelloch hill.

Margaret Dun wife of George Hall in Marshallmark

Perhaps related to another Margaret Dun said to be matryred along with Marion Cameron (sister of Richard Cameron) in Martyrs Moss near Dalgig. The Duns were from Closs in Ochiltree and David Dun was martyred in Cumnock in 1685 and is buried there.

William Campbell and Helen Hair in Straid.

William Campbell may be related to the Campbell's of Dalhanna, or the Laird of Dehana, a family with strong Covenanting traditions. James Campbell of Dalhanna, William Campbell in neighbouring Lochbrowan and John Campbell of Lochingarroch all appear inb the Rev. Simpson's 'Traditions of the Covenanters'. Local tradition maintains that an old Covenanting Flag was in possession of this family for many years.

John Hair and George Corson were martyred at Over Cairn in 1685, en route to Hair's home at Glenwharry in the neigbouring parish of Kirkconnel. The Hair's lands were forfeited and from the parish records it appears many of them set up home in New Cumnock. However, family tombstones dating to early 1700's can still be found in the old St. Connel's kirkyard close to their Glenwharry home. The Campbell's too were staunch Covenanters and tales of the escape

James Logan in the Castle

Probably related to Charles Logan. In 1680, Patrick Gemmel appeared in a Warrant for the Arrest with Richard Cameron and others in which he was referred to as Patrick Gamil son-in-law to Charles Logan messenger in Cumnock Mains.

William Crawford and Margaret Crawford in Garrive

Undoubtedly related to Hugh Crawford, first minister of New Cumnock, one of Ayrhshire's 'true band of Covenanters'. Nether Garrive appears to have been in Crawford hands for some time. George Craufurd of Lefnoreis had a charter from the king for the two-merk land of Nether Garraive in 1539 whilst Hugh Crawford minister had sasine of Nether Garrive in 1669 and it said also to have been in the possession of his grandson Hugh Crawford .

William Mitchell of Midtown of Garrieve

Robert Mitchell martyred in 1685 at Ingliston near Moniave and buried in Glencairn is said to be a member of this family (see Parish Records of 1707)

Matthew Reid and Agnes Reid in Mains

John Reid appears in Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685. There is no above given for him but he appears directly after 'Patrick Gemmil in the Old Castle of Cumnock an William Stillie there' and so perhaps he is John Reid there - i.e. in the Castle or Mains as became to be known.

David Crichton of Craigman

Crichton of Craigman appears in the Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685.

Hugh Halbert

Perhaps related to John Halbert minister of Old Cumnock who appears in the Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685. John Halbert lived in Auchencross New Cumnock, another property belonging to the family of Hugh Crawford.

Place-Names

Most the names are still well known in the parish in the parish with some having undergone some slight modifications. For example Farding Reoch is Fardenreoch (Gaelic 'the brindled farthing-land') and the former Cairn of Buckwhanny now appears as Cairn Buchanan. Quarrel has been lost but it is the Old Scots for quarry from the Latin 'to square' as in squaring the stones.
