My Rating: 10/10
This is a truly excellent episode that has stood the test of time and features the talents of writers Morgan/Wong and director Nutter. Brad Dourif is a brilliant actor who hasn't really got the roles he deserves since his amazing performance in his very first movie, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest" and he does a great job as Boggs, playing Scully against Mulder.
The episode firmly introduces Scully's religious beliefs and Mulder's disbelief in religion as an explanation to an X-File.
Notable Quotable:
Scully: "Last time you were that engrossed, it turned out you were reading the Adult Video News."
Mulder: "I didn’t think you’d be in today. How are you, Dana?"
Scully: " 'Dana'. I’m fine, thank you. What are you working on?"
Scully: "Did Boggs confess?"
Mulder: "No, no, just five hours of Boggs’ channeling. After three hours, I asked him to summon up the soul of Jimi Hendrix and requested "All Along the Watchtower." You know the guy’s been dead for twenty years and he still hasn’t lost his edge."
Scully: "I love this job."
Where Have I Seen That Face Before?
Brad Dourif (Boggs) started his career with an acclaimed performance in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Later roles include "Eyes Of Laura Mars", "Studs Lonigan", "Heaven's Gate", "Dune", "Ragtime", "Blue Velvet", "Mississippi Burning", "Exorcist III", "Graveyard Shift", "Amos and Andrew", "Alien: Resurrection" and the voice of Chucky in the "Child's Play" triology. He also appeared in a "Millennium" episode". There is an official Brad Dourif website.
Fred Henderson (Agent Thomas) has appeared mainly in TV movies and B/horror movies like "Friday The 13th VIII". He's appeared on episodes of "First Wave" and "Harsh Realm".
Trivia
The title refers to the Bobby Darin song Scully's father requested be played at his funeral.
Max Fenig's NICAP hat from "Fallen Angel" is on the hat rack in Mulder and Scully's office.
The names of the two murderers in this episode, Luther Lee Boggs and Lucas Henry, are probably derived from real-life serial killer, Henry Lee Lucas.
A newspaper Mulder holds up features a story, written by G. Morgan, at the bottom with the headline "Gas Chamber Tested for Boggs’ Execution."
Sheila Larken (the actress who plays Scully's mother) is the wife of co-executive producer R. W. Goodwin.
This episode marks the first Moby Dick reference between Scully and her father. She calls her dad 'Ahab' and he calls her 'Starbuck'.
