Fox Press Release
My Rating: 10/10
Mmm, yet again am I the only one who likes this episode? I've read some really damning reviews in a couple of magazines - one gave it a rating of 2 from 10. I thought the ep. was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. One of the all-time classic X-Files episodes in fact. IMHO this episode really had it all - and some of the best writing of any TV show ever. Congratulations to those involved; Chris Carter in particular for the teleplay, although others have described his writing as "purple prose".
The voiceovers by Padgett were extremely effective and the acting by Hawkes and Anderson in particular was brilliant. Is that too much praise? Am I gushing?
The X-File element was nicely done. The killer, summoned from the written word, is frightening and like a good X-file, is not really explained. The ending, where Padgett burns his book to save Scully was a nice touch. The religious overtones were also well handled and fit into the understanding of Scully's character perfectly.
Notable Quotable:
Phillip Padgett: (voiceover) A story can have only one true ending. Even as the stranger felt compelled to commit his final words to paper he did it knowing they must never be read. To see the sum of his work was to see inside his own emptiness the heart of a destroyer not a creator. And yet, reflected back upon him at last he could see his own ending. And in this final act of destruction a chance to give what he could not receive.
Where Have I Seen That Face Before?
Just two days after watching this episode I saw "Rush Hour" on video and there was John Hawkes (Phillip Padgett) in a small role. Hawkes (real name John Perkins), appeared with David Duchovny in "Playing God" and has also been seen in "Sand", "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer", "Home Fries" (the Drew Barrymore movie written by X-Files' Vince Gilligan and also starring Luke Wilson from "Bad Blood"), "Congo", "From Dusk Til Dawn" and an episode of "Millennium".
Nestor Serrano (Ken Naciamento) has appeared in "The Negotiator", "Daylight", "City Hall", "Bad Boys" (with Tea Leoni), "Lethal Weapon II" and "The Indian In The Cupboard".
Angelo Vacco (Kevin) appeared in "F Emasculata" while his only movie role was in "Can't Hardly Wait".
Michael Bailey Smith (Guard) has appeared in "The Rockford Files: I Still Love LA" and "The Fantastic Four".
The Pain Factor:
Scully is in deep deep trouble again, this time almost having her heart literally ripped from her body.
Trivia:
In the cemetery scene, there is a tombstone reading "Salinger", marking the joint burial
plot of Diana Gordon and Nicholas Charles.
They were the parents who were killed by a drunk driver on "Party of Five". The year that they died was 1994 which was the year "Party of Five" premiered on Fox.
