Lighting:
Before lighing a candle, make sure the length
of the wick is correct; it should measure 3/8" - 1/2". If the
candle is new, you may have to shorten the wick to the right length and
then free a section from the wax covering it.
The best way of lighting a candle is with another
candle. Using a match, lighter or fire starter are other ways to light
your candle.
Before lighting any candle, be sure to secure
it in a candleholder at a safe distance from any flammable material. If
the candleholder itself is flammable, or if it is part of a decorative
display that contains flammable materials, extinguish the candles before
they burn down to within a few inches of the holder. Never leave lit candles
unattended.

Extinguishing:
It is common practice to blow on a candle to extinguish it, which tends to bend the wick and drown it in molten wax.
The best way to extinguish a flame is to deprive
it of oxygen. A candle snuffer is the ideal tool, but there are other
items that can act as a snuffer. If you don't have one, you can wet your
thumb and forefinger and use them to pinch out the flame on the wick.
In the past, when candle lighting was an important part of everyday life, knowing
how to light and extinguish one properly were seen as very important skills.
You can turn them into modern-day rituals, if you like and pass them down
to future generations.
