Before electricity became an energy source to almost everyone, fire and candles were the only sources of artificial light. Now, although no longer a necessity, candles are still found in most homes, not merely for their decorative value, but because there is something very special about candlelight. Lighting a few candles immediately changes the ambience of a room, their warm flickering flames entrancing all who enter.
Candles
of different colors, of different sizes, of different shapes, of different
textures. Candles indoors, candles outdoors. Candles lit, candles unlit.
Candles for functionality, candles for décor. A candle's mesmerizing
flame stirs us today as fire has done since the dawn of time. The soothing
hypnotic effect of candlelight is recognized in all societies and cultures,
and it is used universally in religious institutions and ceremonies. The
ambient effect of candlelight can evoke an emotional response that is
immediate. Yet, it also throws us back in time to the primitive emotions
of our earliest ancestors, those who gazed in awe at the volcano, revered
it as a god, and brought the gift of its flame into our lives.
