A 31 year-old computer programmer in Los Angeles. A loner with a broken family.
First cracked a telephone network and eavesdropped people's telephone conversations. On Memorial Day weekend, 1981, Mitnick physically broke into COSMOS with a few friends and stole lists of passwords. He was arrested when a jilted girlfriend of one of the gang members went to the police. Due to minor status, Mitnick spent only for three months in a Juvenile Detention Center with one year probation.
In 1983, Mitnick was arrested in the campus of University of Southern California, accessing illegally to ARPAnet. Even though Mitnick tried to pull himself together in 1987, he still succumbed to the obsession with breaking into computer systems. He stole software from Santa Cruz Operation.
