This bush, which produces the nuruwai fruit, grew in the gardens of Minister Larran's Estate. As he didn't knowingly allow edible plants to grow there, it can be assumed the fruit is not considered as edible. (See: Nuruwai Fruit)
Believed to be a first hand account of profoundly important events by the Sister or one involved. It may be data extracted from someone by means of an Aurora Chair, a mind probe used by Scorpius (episodes: Nerve / Hidden Memory), but this is no longer known. According to mythos, it was taken from the dead hand of the Sister (Chiana) and locked away as Establishment property. At times over the centuries, people gained illegal access and tried making copies. Eventually, to prevent further spread of unrest caused by its contents and/or people interested in its contents, the Establishment destroyed the Aurora Extractions. Two partial copies are known to exist: the Brenl and the Drieth Transcriptions. (See: Brenl Transcription and Drieth Transcription)
The Nebari official in command of a large station of enforcers. Aka, The Chief of Police.
As in, "I ruined my heath drinking to others"
At least one was found in the gardens of Minister Larran's Estate, or it looked like one to John. Unfortunately he didn't seem to recall its significance. (Farscape late season 4)
Dismissive and derisive term for someone thought to be in a bad situation through their own stupidity, probably spoken by someone who is not being very thoughtful.
Believed to contain excerpts of visual based data from the lost Aurora Transcription, including the only genuine evidence of what John and Chiana looked like. Eventually kept by a Fena sect. (See: Aurora Extractions and Drieth Transcription)
Member of Nerri's Resistance Militia. Nebari male. A young man by Nebari standards, about 25 years of age by human eyes, Bursamen was considered impetuous (and a hunk) by Tannac. He was the most capable member of the Urlain sector's unit of the militia, and was seen in a transmission threatening Minister Larran. He effectively worked autonomously, due to the dubious ability of the remainder of the militia and its cautious benefactor, Perkunas. (See: Nerri's Resistance Militia, Tannac, Minister Larran, Perkunas)
An ancient Nebari device more commonly called a Sentinel. Used for security, the shiny silver airborne orbs can capture, poison or kill intruders or enemies with its numerous terrible built in devices. They have a limited logic functioning from externally transmitted instructions and may be fully controlled by a hand held device. It had a storied and notorious past until being outlawed by the Establishment as cruel and dangerous. All Carns were to be destroyed but some survived to be copied and find their way into the hands of shady collectors. Like....Larran.
Member of Nerri's Resistance Militia. Nebari female. A young lady by Nebari standards, about 22 years of age by human eyes, Clan was the stressed-out ostensible leader of the Urlain sector's unit of Nerri's Resistance Militia. With an even puffier mop than Chiana's, a pixie face and nose and an extremely petite body, John Crichton found her cute and fairy-like. Despite her unimposing appearance and near total absence of worthwhile training, she was determined (and bossy) enough to have somehow held a tiny group of even younger volunteers more or less together for some time. (See: Nerri's Resistance Militia, Urlain sector)
A region which is referred to by Larran as relatively lawless and racy. It's probably true, as with his seedy interests, he ought to know. Orren Nus claimed to have been an operative there. (See: Larran, Orren Nus)
A deadly gas emitted by Sentinels. Tannac explained, "You're okay if you can hurry through it and not inhale any, but they'll rot just about any fabric right off of you." (See: Sentinels)
A sinus affliction.
A Nebari dish served by Larran, "basted with Drel, a Fallilk on the side."
Slang for "silly idiot."
Cool, gnarly dude. Seemingly more of a "youth" term.
Somewhat akin to 'mojo'. Used by Tannac. As in, "Those empty rooms gave me a weird Dijma."
From Farscape. Rad! Radical, cool, etc.
A boar which may be eaten, typically served roasted.
Nebari male. A Nebari enforcer who was herding captives who appeared to John to be almost cyborg-like. Might have died from John and Chiana's attack in their attempt to escape.
Slang used by Chiana. Heck. As in, "Let's get in the rocket ship and blast the draz outta here!"
A Nebari dish served by Larran, "Crethel basted with Drel, a Fallilk on the side."
Slang from Farscape. Shit, dung, crap, feces. Often used as expletive.
Believed to contain excerpts of text / thought based data from the lost Aurora Transcription, but all attempts have found it to be indecipherable. Eventually owned by Larran. (See: Aurora Extractions and Brenl Transcription)
Nebari slang for "dumb piece of crap."
as in empty :p
A Nebari dish served by Larran, "Crethel basted with Drel, a Fallilk on the side."
Used loosely as a derisive term for someone or as an expletive similar to Dren or Frell. As in, "Fek face creep."
From Farscape. A derisive term. A creep, a crud, a louse. Perhaps more severe than the similar Frellnik.
An extremely broad term for people who feel some connection to the Sister, the Sister mythos, or holds it in some importance. They may be of any species or any degree of zealousness, from "closet Fena" to outright raving crusader. Often the Fena finds in the Sister mythos a spiritual connections and a sense of spiritual company in a fairly sterile, docile and repressive non-spiritual society. The mores and interests of the Fenas are as varied as the peoples. There may easily be thousands of sects or chapters or clubs or ministries or crusaders or practitioners, ranging from militaristic to purely spiritual.
Most fenas are simply people who believe the Sister represents the lasting spirit, with no moral implications whatsoever. Some might have a charm, tattoo or a image of the Sister which keeps them company. Some hold her more in awe or believe she will be the downfall of the Establishment itself. Some are into it as a sort of sport or hobby, collecting things or studying the subject. Socially, the term is most associated with a stereotype of a poor, scruffy homeless person or a young person of a "good" family who goes "weird." We'd call them a peculiar mix of both zealot and fan. They're hard to define accurately....they're Fenas. (See: Sister)
From Farscape. Crazy. Nuts! Out of one's mind. As in, "That incessant nagging drives me fharbot!" (See: Magra)
A Nebari dish.
A major street in the Urlain sector.
From Farscape. Roughly, 'Fuck'. Used similarly, both a term for sexual activity and a curse or expletive.
From Farscape. A derisive term. A creep, a crud, a louse. Perhaps less severe than the similar Fekkik.
A dish Larran ordered.
An occasion observed by Nebari with a festival. Evidently also associated with questionable behavior.
Farscape term. A derisive term that often has a certain affectionate implication such as "a charming klutz." Associated with naive or clumsy.
A generic, widely used term in Nebari society which can be a proper, deferential manner of addressing a person of authority.
Authority Guide of the Urlain sector. (See: Authority Guide)
An under-represented species on the Metropolise. ;)
Member of an unknown resistance militia. Nebari male. Sharp eyed, sharp minded, sharp faced sharpshooter.
An edible substance which comes in a candy-bar form. When combined with previously ingested Nugeth, Jur is instantly and fatally toxic to Nebari. Chiana eats it straight at one point. (See: Nugeth)
Bannik male. A Bannik slave. Owned by Minister Larran and serving at his estate. Kastara appears to be obedient to Larran, but his highest loyalties may be to Oshana. Of medium, pleasant stature. He seems less composed than fellow Bannik slave Skarle. (See: Larran, Oshana, Skarle)
John calls 'em puppies biscuits and he'll polish off a plate with 'em.
Stupid and tacky or ill-kept. As in, "You look klept in fishbucket boots."
Nebari male. A "street rat," Koresh lives with his lover Sheyza in an abandoned section of the Urlain sector, near the Minister's estate. The couple gave John and Chiana some help they could ill-afford and didn't turn them in to authorities. (See: Sheyza, Urlain)
Equivalent of "cool." Used by Tannac and Mish.
A silly, fancified dandy.
Minister of the Urlain sector. Nebari male. Larran appears to be fairly young, around 30 by human eyes, and of tall, thin build with stylishly coiffed medium length hair that stands in spikes, called "bad Anime hair" by John. Larran inherited his position, and much more besides. As Minister of the Urlain sector, he used his power to exploit whatever wealth could be had in the declining sector, hastening its ruin and abandonment. With his wealth, he funded his lurid and immoral vices, including an obsession with "possessing" the Sister. He collected all known artifacts he could and funded grotesque experiments resulting in botched "clones" of the Sister. As inheritor of the Stakira Trust, he was to see to the maintenance of the remaining Bannik Stakira heritage, as sanctioned by the Nebari, and possibly to play a part in whatever plans John Crichton and Chiana may have been involved in. Instead, he exploits the sole remaining known Stakira for his vices and schemes and uses the other Banniks as slaves. It appears possible that Larran is merely the most rotten in a long line of Ministers whose original knowledge and intents were lost and distorted through time and perhaps other factors. (See: Sister, Urlain).
One of the relics that Oshana possessed were these glorified branding irons used by Luxans to mark their spouse. They were said to have been found with "remains of the Sister" discovered on a "shattered Leviathan." This sister was probably considered to be another reincarnation of the Sister, but what they probably discovered was the remains of the copy of Chiana made by Kaarvok which died soon after creation (episode: Eat Me). Seeing it brought partial but sad memories of D'Argo, her former Luxan lover, to Chiana. However, you may be excused if you find it a little too hard to believe that Chiana would have actually wanted to be scarred for life by the huge larger-than-a-hand sized branding irons to mark her as somebody's property.
A wealthy Nebari socialite of the Urlain sector with a "secret" penchant for throwing wild parties.
Something Larran drugged Chiana with, claiming "Maluk is excellent for making one very open to suggestion, and little else."
An illegal narcotic smoke used by Tannac. It is a liquid which is placed a drop at a time into a small metallic pipe in which it is burnt and inhaled. May have value as a painkiller.
This artificial planet used to be sister planet to Nebar itself, home world of the Nebari people. Seems like it's flown off course in time and fallen into decline the further its gone. Now its once vast population is less than a quarter of what it was, and trade and transportation off world has taken a serious centuries-long nose dive. Over the millennia, it has been partially controlled by PeaceKeepers and other peoples at times. There are many ages of structures to be found. Some of the older ones left include park-like Sebacean biodomes and parts of Minister Larran's estate.
It is divided into sectors of four to several hundreds of square miles entirely consisting of an urban metropolis. At the center of each sector would be the estate of its minister. It had a capitol sector, but it is no longer inhabited. The inhabited areas range from giant skyscraper structures rising hundreds of stories, down to hundreds of stories below the general "street" level (which varies from sector to sector). It is probably inhabitable much deeper, but there's no reason for the scant population to go that far. Generally deteriorating into ruin, its population has also become increasingly seedy. It's the stark contrast to the Nebari Establishment's ideals of a universal clean and utopian life.
Member of Nerri's Resistance Militia. Nebari male. A wiry, thin young man, Mish is a crack computer geek by John's reckoning, the Urlain sector unit's tech. He's imaginative, knows his stuff, and knows a super Nebari girl when he sees one. (See: Nerri's Resistance Militia)
A Nebari dish.
A huge, unwieldy, multiple-barreled machine gun more powerful than a standard rifle and, obviously, capable of more rapid fire. Not entirely dissimilar from a a common weapon.
A Nebari wasting disease. Evidently not thought to be curable, as victims are usually soon euthanized.
Nebari slang for bathroom.
Nebari male. Called "Leader" by Larran, this is a captain of guards who was responsible for recovering the escaped Chiana and John Crichton. He was overruled by Larran and obliged to leave. (Part Three). (See: Larran)
A humanoid alien species of which Chiana is a member. Physically they have a creamy grey skin that varies from silvery at surface levels to charcoal black in recesses and accents like lips. The males have jet black hair. The females have white hair with dark roots. All Nebari have light blue blood and distinctive large black eyes. Socially a strong desire for peace and order long ago morphed into an extremely conformist and repressive society which can sanctify extreme brutality and cruelties in attempting to enforce order and conformity. Their single effectively uncontested government is known simply as The Establishment. Technologically they are leading-edge next to any comparable species. Some time after Farscape: Peacekeeper War and long before Destination Unclear, the Nebari effectively subjugated all of known space under their supposed control. By the time of Destination Unclear no serious opposition had existed for many generations.
The NRM sees itself as a continuance of a heritage of resistance which wishes to date itself to the founding of the original, ill-fated Nebari Resistance led by Chiana's brother, Nerri. While any direct lineage is very likely wishful thinking, various chapters do manage to do small operations which they consider to be "resisting the Establishment." The Establishment is not worried. The Urlain unit, in particular, are about as unlikely as any to bother the Establishment, but fittingly, it is they who turn out to be in the actual presence of the closest thing ever to Nerri. All the better, since Nerri's Resistance Militia, as suggested by its name, is particularly concerned with the Sister mythos and many members may be Fenas. (See: Fenas, Urlain)
A Nebari Enforcer's standard weapon. Probably closer to a "stun gun" than a pulse pistol. (See: Pulse Weapons)
An ancient Nebari term used for mythical abilities and those who were said to have been able to wield them. Larran uses this term when witnessing Chiana's eyes changing. It is possible that Chiana is a Neythra.
Mentioned by Larran, she seems to have been an assistant that helped him in various unseemly capacities.
A major street in the Urlain sector.
An edible substance which comes in a candy-bar form. If Nugeth is ingested previous to eating Jur, the interaction is instantly and fatally toxic to Nebari. (See: Jur)
The fruit of the annila bush, Nuruwai appears similar to a Persimmon (in fact, John's microbes translated Chiana's description of an Anilla bush as "as sickly looking Persimmon bush") but is often found in a light green husk on the plant. It is not considered to be edible. Strictly speaking it is edible but effectively consumes nutrients rather than gives any. Oshana encourages Chiana to eat it, as it is a powerful mind-altering hallucinogen agent which is associated with the Sister. Possibly some practitioners had eaten it to gain a state they considered to be enlightened or in communion with the Sister. It appears to offer a possible means for Chiana to recover some otherwise lost memory, although the associations would be suspect.
A front for the Urlain chapter of Nerri's Resistance Militia owned by Perkunas. One of their legitimate businesses involves cutting fine stones. (See: Perkunas, Nerri's Resistance Militia)
Sebacean female. Claiming to be a resistance operative, Orren appears "recommended" to Perkunas by unknown resistance in the Clarticies region, responding to the Urlain unit of Nerri's Resistance Militia's needs. The tall, black haired, strong featured Sebacean woman is a frank and capable fighter who claims to be from the Clarticies region.
Bannik Stakira female. Slave to Minister Larran. The only known Bannik Stakira left by the time of Destination Unclear, Oshana is a confirmed, practicing Fena. She believes she can communicate or commune with the Sister, and it seems there's a dark truth to it. Although essentially imprisoned in Larran's estate her entire life since birth, she does communicate with Fenas outside of the estate, perhaps with complicity of the other Bannik servants. Some consider her to be genuinely divining the Sister's will, or so she believes. Oshana has a satchel with relics believed to be related with the Sister and some other items as well. Her loyalties to the Minister, as caretaker of the Stakira and her owner, and to the Sister, are twisted and convoluted. Considered to be mentally unstable and "a Coors short of a get-together" by John, she is always treading uncertain ground. John doesn't specifically remember Stark, but Oshana's behavior and abilities remind him of some things about the Stakira he knew. With big royal blue eyes and a small build, she is cute in what John calls a "mousy" way.
Nebari male. One of the leading businessmen of the Urlain sector, he leads a double life of legitimate business and benefactor of the Urlain unit of Nerri's Resistance Militia. Occasional lover of Tannac. Cool-headed, he's considered to be overly cautious by Bursamen. Probably with good cause.
Although long considered obsolete and presumably introduced or popularized in ancient times past by the long-vanished PeaceKeepers, pulse weapons remain ubiquitous and the most commonly found weapon. The neutralizers used by Nebari official forces are not easily obtained outside of Establishment issue. Pulse weapons can be used in pistol, rifle, machine gun rifle, sniper rifle, mortar or cannon form. Ammunition is in the form of a kind of oil agent which is kept in disposable cartridges.
I used to play that once heh heh
An organization espousing moral values. ("Why" [Chiana] asked "are you babbling like a Repmek hypocrite to a congregation after a Gloran Festival?")
A humanoid species whose militant body, the PeaceKeepers, had been a defacto ruling power in uncounted areas and worlds long ago, when John and Chiana had started out in the Uncharted Territories. At one time they seem to have controlled and colonized at least portions of the Metropolise. They have fallen in power and population becoming a subject species to the Nebari. They are human in most repects, with one conspicuous exception being an inability to regulate temperature and tolerate high temperatures. (Sebaceans are common sight in Farscape)
See Carn.
Nebari female. A "street rat," Sheyza lives with her lover Koresh in an abandoned section of the Urlain sector, near the Minister's estate. The couple gave John and Chiana some help they could ill-afford and didn't turn them in to authorities. (See: Sheyza, Urlain)
Upon close inspection during a phase of blindness, Larran thought that this region of Chi's eyes or nerves showed damage. Chiana wasn't familiar with the term. I asked her heh heh
A red-haired Kalish woman who, not unlike Chiana and John, doesn't remember her past very well due to suffering some combination of deliberate and accidental damage. She believes that she is a person from the past named Sikozu Shanu (and that is the full name as far as she knows) and that she knew Chiana and John. She appears to have abilities that set her apart from most of her humanoid species like a Stakira is a Bannik with remarkable abilities, but she may have been genetically engineered for the traits rather than naturally gifted. Abilities include being able to change her gravitational direction (to walk on a wall for example) and emit a radiation burst deadly to the old enemy of the Kalish people, Scarrans.
Also known as Chiana! With the catastrophic failure of the Cause, the Nebari Resistance led by Chiana's brother Nerri, and the eventual takeover of all known space by the Nebari Establishment, Nerri took on great historic, social and personal importance to many people in a great many cultures. It was believed that Chiana and her companions, as they were seen, had an important role in events as well. It was also believed that Chiana has died and returned to be seen numerous times. Many believe that proof was discovered when at least one other corpse of Chiana was found in later times. Stories of Chiana, her adventures, the companions, how Chiana lived and died all vary greatly and came to make up a vast folk lore mythos.
All of the mythos is denied and discouraged by the sole order, the Establishment. Over centuries, various beliefs evolved, including the belief that the spirit of the Sister was alive, could be divined and communicated with, that she would return again to prove spirits lived beyond death, and that she would someday return to foretell the eventual fall of the Establishment, bringing freedom to all. How much of it is believed, and what else may be believed, depends on the individual and their sect, if they ascribe to one. Obvious followers or believers are called Fenas. As Chiana might say, "Toooooo weird....." But truly the Cause and needs for the Cause didn't die with Nerri and Chiana. (See: Fenas, Larran, Oshana)
Bannik male. A Bannik slave. Owned by Minister Larran and serving at his estate. Skarle appears to be obedient to Larran, but his highest loyalties may be to Oshana. Tall and somewhat gaunt in stature, he seems more composed than fellow Bannik slave Kastara. (See: Larran, Skarle)
A snot, snob, or stupid fool. "That stuffy shopkeeper is such a snerit."
Some rare Bannik people have mysterious abilities many others would call magical. The nearest description might be that they have a built-in portal to a spiritual or alternate plane of existence which living spirits may pass to upon the death of their mortal form. They are keenly aware of the life and death of others. Perhaps not surprisingly John remarked that both Stakira he had met were unstable and fruity by his own standards.
Scarran female. Ambitious and driven Ruling Order Scarran, leader of a special operations unit.
Member of Nerri's Resistance Militia. Nebari female. In her younger 30's by human eyes, she is the eldest associated with the Urlain unit of Nerri's Resistance Militia. A confirmed Fena, Tannac has made a pilgrimage to South Walden Prime, said to have been birthplace of the Sister and Nerri, and for some time seems to have believed that she was Chiana, reincarnated. Between identity struggles, Tannac was a well-known and uncommonly effective resistance figure with a rogue reputation, probably loathed by some, idolized by some and praised by many. She's also known for being armed to the hilt, sometimes carrying around a rare multi-facility pulse rifle.
But her latest phase seems to be a terminal downward spiral. The now jaded and somewhat acerbic Tannac has come to join the Urlain sector of Nerri's Resistance Militia, but she has also staked out a makeshift shelter in an otherwise totally abandoned former garbage dump where she's literally wasting away. Her marnnat use seems regular and she's barely involved in the militia. She has a qualified interest in the "impetuous hunk" Bursamen, and has occasional frells and meetings with benefactor Perkunas. But then comes John and Chiana.... (See: Nerri's Resistance Militia, Urlain, Marnnat, Multi-facility pulse rifle, Bursamen, Perkunas)
Nebari male. Like his fellow enforcer, Draun, he was herding captives who appeared to John to be almost cyborg-like. Might have died from John and Chiana's attack in their attempt to escape.
A Nebari dish.
A humanoid species usually found in pairs. Valued for their craftswork, such as jewelerysmiths.
Some unlucky anti-Establishment person. Perkunas said, "Whoever turned in Trun after the Elnto Nohj heist was too intimidated to reveal themselves, so, since some fortunate circumstances made it appear to be possible, I took the credit."
A conformist, pro-Establishment Nebari that John considered to be a fruitcake.
A fine beverage, to be sampled much like a fine wine.
A sector of Metropolise Nirthrian Prime. Roughly on a higher plateau than the bordering sectors to allow easier transport to and from space vessels. Once a thriving area, centered on trade from the ships that would land there. Ships don't land there anymore. Once the single richest sector, it is now well below its more populous neighbors. Much of the hundred mile stretch in either direction from Minister Larran's central estate is effectively abandoned. The more recent of the line of Ministers hasn't exactly helped its fortunes. (See: Metropolise Nirthrian Prime, Larran)
An alien world John and Chiana had once been on, noted by John as being one endless stereotypical metropolis.
Nebari female. Tech. Late 30's, perhaps early 40's to human eyes. In appearance, she reminds John of a Nebari female named Varla (episode: A Clockwork Nebari) that he can't remember much about. A brilliant biologics scientist who was censored by the Establishment for some notorious reason or other. Found employment with Minister Larran, to tend "biologics" in his garden and oh yeah, make a living clone of the Sister.
Farscape term. Dweeb. Dufus. Goofy idiot :p
A cereal regarded as providing energy. Yes, it's the Nebari Wheaties, breakfast of conformists.
Descriptive term that applies well to Chiana.
Chiana seems to remember having been at the Yunbik penal moon, apparently a horrible place.
Something my twisted muse too often deprives me of.
