Chapter 2 - 1999 Revisited
by Gaspar

Crono landed with a thud.  He was on a building with a lot of people.  They had signs that said “y2k, the end of mankind”.  Crono was scared of that at first, until news reporter came up to Crono.

“It doesn’t look like you belong here, sir.”  Said the reporter.  “These guys are fanatics, nothing to worry about.  They think the world will end in about a couple of hours.  It won’t.”

Crono was confused.  He saw radical clothing, and metal on noses, and things that where either too primitive from the future, or too distant from the past.  He was led to the elevator.  Since he had trouble with it, the reporter assumed he was a foreigner, and started speaking in a slow manner to him. That annoyed Crono, so he left without word after reaching the first floor.  When he got out, he saw something familiar.  He saw a huge spiky alien thing.  Lavos.  Only, it looked dead.  There were police all around it, and they looked at Crono like he was dressed like a lunatic.  He thought they were rather embarrassing.  It surprised him that Lavos was dead.  He heard the police whispering to each other.  Then, he saw a helicopter net the creature, and fly it out of site.  Crono was amazed by this technology.  The only technology he saw before was in the future, and that was a messed up future.  He never got to see the new future after the death of Lavos.  Now, he saw Lavos being carried away in a helicopter, and the information was too much for him.  Instead he walked into a café.  The way you got coffee here was much too mechanical.  He saw the television in wonder, and then saw something interesting in the news.

“A strange creature, thought to be dead, was found in a pass in the Himalayas.  It was transported to New York, and then carried off to a nearby preliminary research facility for further government research.  After much hard work, they have found what they believe to be an alien inside.  They have managed to communicate with the creature, and are currently transporting it to government facilities to start researching its capabilities heavily.  Once they find the exact communication method, this creature may lead us to unsurpassable secrets of the universe, and maybe of time itself.”

Crono stood at the shining box and cursed at himself for a while.  He couldn’t even get coffee in this world.  Now he had to find Lavos.
