Editions in which letters appeared

Hayle Mail Aug. 18, 1914

This week has been a quiet one as regards Cornish people travelling to and from the States. You will notice by the list of names that it is very small, and no doubt now all the different countries are mixed up in this terrible war it will continue to be quieter till peace is declared.

During the past week there has been great excitement in New York over the war and owing to the different steamship being watched in and out of this port by some cruisers, but this will not interfere we think with the American Lines, as these ships sail under the stars and stripes. These boats will no doubt go to and fro each week as usual. From all appearances therefore we shall not be cut off from communication with the old country.

Tomorrow night the New York Cornish Association will meet here for the fortnightly gathering. I will write about this in my next letter.
