The letter home
Places They Settled
Some of the Cornish were unable to read or write and would ask a friend to write a letter or postcard home for them. On a Sunday, which was their only day off, they would find sit in the sunshine with the scribe as he wrote and told the folks back home of how they were progressing. Those that could read and write may well have stayed indoors in order to write to the family.
Below you will find post card views of some of the places where Cornish people went in the USA and Canada. Probably thousands of postcards reached Cornwall especially at Christmas which was the traditional time for keeping in touch
I have linked the postcards with other peoples web sites and have tried to find web sites which give information on the places as they were at the time the Cornish were writing their letters home. Click on the Post cards to see a larger image then on the place name to visit a site.
