Hayle Mail Oct. 8th 1914

This week has not been such a brisk one. Nevertheless, those that came through have experienced ideal travelling weather. Incoming vessels have reported pleasant trips notwithstanding having to traverse troubled waters. British cruisers are often sighted and with no small amount of satisfaction. At this time of year we don't get the rush that we have during the spring and summer months.

The mines have felt the effects of the iron hand and there seems to be little activity in the West, most having closed down. The Boys go out sightseeing during the day and at night we have our checkers and billiards and generally finish up with some nice music and singing.

They talk of going up Camborne Hill coming down, and sing of "Being here because we are here". Surely our old friend Jan Stewar has not much on some of the Boys when they sit down and spin yarns. The evenings have been most pleasant and at the same time no "Clome has been scat".

Our Friend Dick George has met with a set back at last losing the checker championship to his younger brother Joe. (Joe by the way is not quite so chesty as Dick). He played a fine game and is likely to be the undefeated champion a long time unless someone coming or going to Cornwall steps in. So boys that's all.
