Scottish Youth Cup - Second Round

Scorers - McDairmid (13), McCallum (58, 64, 75)

Cowden cruised into the third round of the Scottish Cup after comfortably disposing of Edinburgh outfit Civil Service Strollers. The Blue Brazil took an early lead when an incisive ball from Jonathan Bain was slammed into the net by Conan McDairmid from 15 yards. Cowden were well on top throughout the match and Lee Black almost added a second when his fierce effort struck the bar.

The visitors began to fade after the break and Ryan McCallum extended Cowden's advantage when he headed home from close range after Danny Sweeney had done the spadework on the right. Six minutes later, McCallum struck again when he drilled the ball into the corner of the net following a clever lay-off from Black. McCallum completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes to go after another great ball from Bain was buried with clinical precision.

St Mirren - Muir (27, 53)

Cowden shared the points with St Mirren in a pulsating match at Humbug Park that could have gone either way. Alan Muir shot the visitors ahead when his 25-yard free kick entered the net via the inside of the post. The Blue Brazil levelled when Jackie Myles slotted home a penalty after a trialist had been chopped down in the box.

Cowden edged in front when Lee Black broke into the box and confidently fired the ball into the corner of the net. Saints squared the match after the break when Muir sent another long-range free kick into the net. Both sides strove for a winner but a draw was a fair result at the end of the day.

Scottish Youth League

Cowdenbeath - Buchanan (29, 44, 85)

Alloa - Haney (78)

The young Blue Brazil completed a league and cup double over plucky Alloa at Humbug Park. It was Cowden's first three points of the season and the hero of the day was Liam Buchanan, who weighed in with a hat-trick.

Buchanan opened the scoring when he netted from close range after the Wasps defence had failed to clear a free kick from Danny Sweeney. The second goal arrived just before the interval when John Slaven headed goalwards and Buchanan made sure from six yards.

Enjoying wind advantage in the second half, the visitors were more of a threat and they reduced the deficit when George Haney bundled the ball home. As the Wasps pressed for a leveller, Gareth Blackadder broke away for Cowden and picked out Buchanan who finished in fine style to complete a good afternoon's work.

Cowdenbeath - Allan Fleming, Danny Sweeney, Jonathan Bain (Grant Killin, 52), Darren McGregor, Kevin Robertson, Jackie Myles, Mark McEwen, Danny Munro (Conan McDairmid, 69), Liam Buchanan, John Slaven (Gareth Blackadder, 75), Lee Black.

Scottish Youth Cup - First Round

Cowden began their Scottish Cup adventure with a creditable victory at Recreation Park. The Blue Brazil took a while to hit their stride but they managed to break the deadlock right on the stroke of half time. Mark McEwen broke down the left and sent an inch-perfect cross to the far post where Ryan McCallum ran in to bullet a header into the net.

Grant Killin should have increased Cowden's advantage but scooped his eight-yard effort over the bar when it appeared easier to score. Conan McDairmid was next to have a go and he rattled the crossbar with a strike from fully 30 yards.

McDairmid clinched the match for the Blue Brazil when his sweetly-struck free kick flew into the net from a distance of 25 yards. There was no way back for the Wasps and a late red card saw them finish the match with ten men.

Cowdenbeath - John Gilbertson, Conan McDairmid, Graham Gerrard (Craig Edgar, 45), Darren McGregor, Kevin Robertson, Paul Currie, Mark McEwen, Danny Munro, Grant Killin (Danny Sweeney, 86), Liam Buchanan (Gareth Blackadder, 66), Ryan McCallum.

Stirling 5 Cowdenbeath 2

Sunday, August 24
Scottish Youth League

The under 19's opened their league campaign with a disappointing defeat at Forthbank Stadium (... writes Andy Mullen)

Albion were quick off the mark with a goal after only two minutes when Darren Cummings shot home from 20 yards. Cowden equalised when a Liam Buchanan shot from an acute angle ran along the line and Lee Black fired the ball home.

The home side restored their lead just before the break when a powerful shot from Andy Bonnar came back off the bar and Chris Lochead followed up to score.

Cowden once again drew level when Buchanan was brought down 25 yards out and Conan McDairmid curled his free kick round the Albion wall.

Stirling scored a third goal after when Kevin Smith parried a shot from Bonnar and Cummings was on hand to shoot home. With 13 minutes to go, a mistake from Cowden centre half Kevin Robertson allowed Eddie Logan to score easily and another defensive slip enabled Chris Lochead to complete the scoring.

Cowdenbeath - Kevin Smith, Conan McDairmid, Graham Gerrard, Darren McGregor, Kevin Robertson, Paul Currie, Mark McEwan, Danny Munro, Liam Buchanan (Gareth Blackadder, 62), Ryan McCallum (Grant Killin, 68), Lee Black (Craig Edgar, 44).
