Lao Zi's Biography

the Old Master, 5th century B.C.?

Sounds like Pooh Bear

The ancient Masters were profound and subtle.
Their wisdom was unfathomable.
There is no way to describe it;
all we can describe is their appearance.

They were careful
as someone crossing an iced-over stream.
Alert as a warrior in enemy territory.
Courteous as a guest.
Fluid as melting ice.
Shapable as a block of wood.
Receptive as a valley.
Clear as a glass of water.

Do you have the patience to wait
till your mud settles and the water is clear?
Can you remain unmoving
till the right action arises by itself?

The Master doesn't seek fulfillment.
Not seeking, not expecting,
she is present, and can welcome all things. [15]

Lao Zi doesn't have a biography. In fact he is rumored, like Shakespeare, to have been a Nom de Plume rather than a person.

So, does that mean Shakespeare wrote the Dao De Jing (Classic of the Way and its Power)?

I'll let someone else answer that...

Daoism Glossary

Of course Daoism has a much different face in the West than in China, and a much different face than in Lao Zi's time. More important than the differences are the similarities.

No one is unfit for synergy but we have to be humble enough to ask for help getting there. The face of our original human Master might be different than what we expect, but it would be foolish to not begin Lao Zi's 'journey of one thousand miles' because we don't like the hair color of the person holding the map and carrying the provisions.

A good teacher leads you to your own internal teacher. Once in synergy with yourself, you will see all your different faces combined. Just as the combination of all colored lights make colorless light, the melding of our identities leads to seeing and feeling and being a light in our meditations. That light is the master teacher.
