Review Model Grades Specs Options+Accessories Performance Safety

Intro

With moves that were born on the track, it will have you thinking you were too. The 2003 Toyota Celica boasts precise handling and quick reflexes. Of course there's the strength part, too. The GT-S is powered by a 1.8-liter VVTL-i engine that delivers 180 hp -- 100 hp per liter. Which means commanding the 6-speed manual or 4-speed Sportshift automatic transmission will accelerate your spirit in no time at all. Another model that corners with authority is the GT. It too has an aggressive stance inspired by Indy cars. Add the Action Package to either model and you'll also flaunt rocker panels, a rear wing spoiler and distinctively styled aero front and rear bumpers. A few minutes in the driver's seat might just inspire you to hire a pit crew.

Highlights for 2002 Model

Toyota's sporty 4-cyl hatchback coupe gets a new optional appearance package for '02. Celica is offered as the 140-hp GT model and the sportier 180-hp GT-S. The GT comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, the GT-S with a 6-speed. Automatic is optional for both and provides the GT-S with steering-wheel buttons for manual shifting. ABS and front side airbags are optional, as is a sunroof and rear spoiler. GT-S options include leather upholstery and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. Available on both models, the new Action Package option includes an adjustable rear spoiler and unique lower-body addenda.

News

After skyrocketing over threefold in calendar 2000, Celica year-to-year sales dropped 31.2 percent in the first nine months of 2001. A faltering economy is an undoubted factor, but we also suspect some of the younger buyers Celica targets are defecting to more practical fun cars such as Toyota's own new Matrix compact sportwagon.

Future Developments

Celica is expected to be redesigned for 2004, a year earlier than Toyota's usual five-year timetable calls for. The current new-for-2000 design should see no major changes in the interim, but Toyota will reportedly seek to boost sales by offering more over-the-counter performance, handling and appearance parts for Celica, developed and marketed by the Toyota Racing Developments (TRD) division.
