ALCOHOL
/ LIQUOR
The term Alcohol
refers to alcoholic beverages, whose effects are related
to their alcoholic content and to the level of alcohol
in the blood resulting from their misuse.
Alcohol which
is extracted from chemical compound as ethyl and
hydro-carbon, is a dangerous chemical substance
which triggers the central nervous system and may damage
vital human organs. Like any other drug dependent, alcoholics
prefer a brand of liquor that works fast, such as: gin,
whisky, rhum and brandy, because
of the percentage of alcohol mixture. The most common
abused brand of liquor is "whisky". This
is followed by "beer" or pilsen.
EFFECTS
OF ALCOHOL USE
- Gives us feeling of relaxation
and loss of inhibitions
- A sense of excitement due
to the release of inhibitions
- Motor activity, motor skills
and coordination are disrupted
- Deep intoxication cause disturbance
in bodily process
- Superficial blood vessels
are dillated causing warm feeling
- Deep intoxication can lead
to "coma" or death
- Concenciousness begins to
wane causing mental duliness
- Loss of self-contro resulting
in violent behaviorl
ABUSE
OF ALCOHOL / LIQUOR
Alcohol depresed the action
of the central nervous system, and is not a stimulant
as is frequently thought. Its action is the same as that
of any other general anesthetic. Prolonged and excessive
use of alcohol will result in damage to the brain with
symptoms of delerium tremens, korsakoff's
psychosis, and Wernicke's disease. Other
physical conditions include cirrhosis of the liver,
damage to the digestive system, and associative malnutrition.
Small amount of alcohol can affect judgement & coordination.
FIRST
AID TREATMENT
Alcohol intoxication can be
treated as follows:
- If the person is sleeping
quietly, his face is of normal color, his breathing
is normal for first aid treatment
- When the person shows sign
of shock, like: cold and clammy skin, rapid
and irregular pulse, abnormal breathing,
and is unconcious, get medical help immediately
- Always maintain an open airway,
give artificial respiration if necessary, and maintain
normal body heat
- If the victim is unconcious,
place him in a "coma" position, this will
allow good respiration
- Be careful in handling intoxicated
persons, since they may become violent and harm others
