The delayed Buffy the Vampire episiode ROOFTOP - NIGHT Buffy is still at the ledge, the truck with Faith's body long gone. Buffy stands wearily. She looks at the knife in her hands. She lets the knife drop out of her hand and onto the ledge. She thinks for moment. She then climbs down a ladder at the side of the building. As she disappears, the camera turn towards the window she and Faith crashed through. It looks up to the window as the Mayor arrives. He looks out of it, too late to see anything of Buffy and Faith... FAITH'S APARTMENT - NIGHT The Mayor turns as a VAMP HENCHMAN enters from the kitchen. VAMP HENCHMAN: There's nobody here, sir. MAYOR: No. No, she'd take the fight outside. My Faith doesn't like to be cooped up. He crosses back to the middle of the room, brain still working furiously. MAYOR: We have to find them. Put everyone on it, do it now. VAMP HENCHMAN: But sir, the Ascension is... MAYOR: FIND THEM! (He screams) The vamp leaves. The Mayor looks around. He tries to maintain his composure. MAYOR: Faith's a good girl. She can handle anything they throw at her. She's gonna be all right. The camera moves at him as he continues, mantra like. MAYOR: She'll be all right. She'll be all right. BLACK OUT (Intro music) LIBRARY - NIGHT Giles is looking through books as Xander enters with two cups of coffee from a machine. XANDER: Any word from Buffy? GILES: Not yet. XANDER: Here's your coffee. Brewed from the finest Colombian lighter fluid. GILES: Thank you. He takes a sip and cringes. GILES: Horrible. He takes another sip. XANDER: Aren't you supposed to be drinking tea anyway? GILES: Tea is soothing. I wish to be tense. XANDER: Okay, but you're destroying a perfectly good cultural stereotype here... GILES: Look through the Kippler volumes. Any reference to the Demon Olvikon...powers, weaknesses, hat size...there's got to be something. XANDER: You sill batting' zero? (Giles gives him a look) But, I mean, in cricket? GILES: So far. But don't give up. Cordy enters on a mission. XANDER: Cordy. Wassup? CORDELIA: I demand an explanation. XANDER: For what? CORDELIA: Wesley! XANDER: Uh...inbreeding? CORDELIA: So very funny. Any minute now I'm sure to laugh. (To Giles) I just got off the phone with him. He could hardly speak, he was so upset. He said there'd been a fight or something and...he said he was leaving the country. GILES: Shall I assay remorse? CORDELIA: Just tell me what's going on. (There is honest pain in her eyes. Giles replies with somewhat more gravity.) GILES: Buffy has quit the Council. She'll not be working with Wesley from now on. CORDELIA: But he's her Watcher! GILES: Buffy no longer needs a Watcher. CORDELIA: Well, does he have to leave the country? I mean you got fired and you still hang around like a big looser, why can't he? XANDER: Cordelia. We're trying to stop a massacre here. You wanna give us a hand? She pauses. CORDELIA: Sure. As she moves to join them, she mutters: CORDELIA: That's just such a typical Buffy thing to do. She's always thinking of herself. ANGEL'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Willow sits with Angel. He is sweating, breathing shallow. Hardly conscious. Willow dabs his forehead with a damp cloth. He shudders, opens his eyes. Looks at her with sudden clarity. WILLOW: You're awake. ANGEL: You've been watching over me? She nods. He weakly takes her hand, tenderly kisses the palm of it. Willow's a little confused. WILLOW: Well, we've been taking turns... ANGEL: I thought I'd never...see you again. I can't leave you. I was wrong...I need you. WILLOW: Oh. You mean you need Buffy? He smiles warmly, the fever on taking a obvious toll on him. Suddenly, it clears a bit and he looks harder. ANGEL: Willow? WILLOW: Yes! Right. Good. ANGEL: Where is she? WILLOW: She'll be back soon. He drifts back to sleep. A moment and Willow exits. MANSION - CONTINUOUS She finds Oz by the door to the garden, looking out at the night sky. He meets her. OZ: Any changes? WILLOW: He's delirious. He thought I was Buffy. OZ: You too, huh? WILLOW: I hope she comes soon. I mean, she'd better, if... OZ: Yeah. WILLOW: I feel so...I feel so guilty. OZ: Guilty? WILLOW: Well, things are just so terrible, everything's coming apart, and I'm just...in some way it's the best night of my life. OZ: The best? WILLOW: The best. He kisses her. It becomes passionate -- and Buffy enters from the front. Oz and Willow break guiltily apart. Willow blurts out: WILLOW: I just checked on him - just now! We're watching. Buffy is too preoccupied to have noticed their indiscretion. OZ: Did you find Faith? Buffy nods. WILLOW: You didn't...she's not here? BUFFY: (shakes her head) How is he? OZ: Comes in and out...I think the pain is...less, now. Buffy knows full well what that means. There is a moment of silence between the three of them. BUFFY: Why don't you guys...I'd like to be with him. OZ: Of course. WILLOW: We can keep looking for another cure. BUFFY: Thanks. They exit. Slowly Buffy closes the door behind them. She turns from the door with an entirely different expression. One of purpose. She crosses towards the bedroom. Buffy enters, crosses to Angel. She sits on the bed and touches him. He awakens with a start, looks at her. ANGEL: Buffy... It's you? BUFFY: It's me. He smiles weakly. ANGEL: I didn't want to go without...seeing you... BUFFY: Angel. I can cure you. ANGEL: It's okay... I'm ready... BUFFY: Angel, listen to me. Sit up. She hoists him to a sitting position. Looks right in his eyes. BUFFY: You're gonna live. You have to live. ANGEL: What do I... BUFFY: Drink. He looks at her, almost comprehending. She pulls off her jacket, moves her tanktop gently aside. BUFFY: Drink me. A moment more and he jerks away from her. ANGEL: No! BUFFY: It's the only... ANGEL: Get away! He gets up from the bed, stands swayingly before her. BUFFY: It'll save you. ANGEL: It'll kill you. BUFFY: Maybe not. If you don't take it all... ANGEL: You can't ask me to do this. BUFFY: I won't let you die. I can't. T he blood of the Slayer is the only cure. ANGEL: Faith... BUFFY: I tried to...I killed her. ANGEL: Then it's over. BUFFY: No. She moves to him. He shoves her aside and exits. MANSION - CONTINUOUS He makes it five steps before stumbling, sitting heavily on the coffee table, scattering items including a metal water jug to the floor. Buffy follows him out and jerks him roughly to his feet. ANGEL: It's over! BUFFY: It's never over. I won't let you die. Drink. ANGEL: Please... She hits him in the face. He takes the hit, looks back at her, weak and uncomprehending. She hits him again. He looks at her, understanding flooding into his eyes. She hits him again. He looks back at her, vamped out. She tears her tanktop aside. Grabs the back of his head and slams it down on her neck. Cool vamp yellow eye shot looking down her neck. He drinks. Long, shuddering gulps as his hands tighten around her, a streak of dark red blood trickling down her back as he pulls her hard to him, overbalancing her, they fall -- -- in extreme slow motion, they hit the ground, Angel on top, face still buried in her flesh....Buffy winces, mouth open in a silent cry, unable to catch her breath -- -- Buffy's hand flails, finds the water jug, squeezes it, bending the thick metal -- Her legs curl up around him -- then shoot out in a sudden spasm, slamming into the table and breaking it in half. She finally does scream, a hoarse, primal call -- He hears. He wrenches himself free, throwing himself backwards onto the floor, breathing intensely hard, blood on his lips. A few racking breaths and he morphs back to human. Still lying there, he feels the fever break in him. He is strong again. Getting his bearings he looks over at Buffy, blood covering his lips. ANGEL: Buffy? She lies very still, blood pooled around an ugly wound in her neck. Her eyes open and unmoving. He moves to her, quiet panic filling him. ANGEL: Buffy? She does not move. BLACK OUT HOSPITAL - NIGHT Angel runs into the ER carrying Buffy in his arms. He runs towards a doctor and nurse in an open room. ANGEL: I need some help...she's lost a lot of blood... NURSE: What happened? He places her on the bed...he is frantic. ANGEL: She needs blood...something bit her. She needs a transfusion... NURSE: Try to stay calm, we'll take care of her... YOUNG DOCTOR: You found her? ANGEL: Yes. DOC: Was she conscious? ANGEL: Yes. DOC: Are you sure? ANGEL: I'm sure. DOC: Okay. (to the nurse) I need a type and a cross match. Get her on two lines ringers lactate. Watch for hypervalemic shock. (to Angel) Tell me...what happened? ANGEL: Something bit her, I don't know what? DOC: Okay. (to nurse) I need a rabies shoot treatment. (to Angel) Any allergies? ANGEL: None. (pushes on the door handle and snaps it off with his bare hands) Just help her. DOC: You two been doing drugs? You want her to live you're going to have to be staight with me. ANGEL: She's clean. DOC: All right...wait outside...let us work ANGEL: The phone? DOC: Right out there. Angel leaves the room and walks a few feet towards the phone. It is between Buffy's and another adjoining hospital room. He places a quarter in and begins to dial. ADJOINING HOSPITAL ROOM - CONTINUOS An older doctor is explaining Faith's condition to the Mayor. The Mayor stares blankly in a state of shock. As the doctor talks the camera zooms in on Faith's bruised face. OLDER DOC: The bones are set...and the damage to the kidneys is repairable...but the head trauma...it's...well...it's simply too severe. You know it's a wonder she's alive at all with all the blood loss...I'm sorry sir...there's almost no chance that she's ever going to regain consciousness. The Mayor walks up to Faith and softly brushes the side of her hair with his hand. He says weakly: MAYOR: It's your day... A nurse walks in and starts talking with the older doctor. NURSE: We have another young girl, severe blood loss. Dr. Powell wants you to prep and assist on a anticubical cutdown. OLDER DOC: I'll be right there. The Mayor overhears their conversation. As the doctor leaves the room Wilkins slowly walks through the center door into Buffy's room. She is unattended. He places a pale white hand over her nose and mouth trying to smoother her. A nurse enters the room. NURSE: Oh my God! Sir no. (She tries to pull his arm off, to no avail) Somebody call security. (She runs out of the room for help) ANGEL: Don't do that. (He pulls the Mayor off of her) MAYOR: I will...I'll do that and worse. (to Buffy) Murderous little fiend! (to Angel) Did you see what she did to my faith? ANGEL: I hadn't made plans to weep over that one. MAYOR: Well I'd get ready for some weeping if I were you. I'd get set for a world of pain. Misery loves company, young man and I'm looking to share that with you and your whore. Angel shoves him and he goes flying across the room into a hospital tray...smashing a window. The nurse returns outside the door with a few orderlies. MAYOR: (gets up laughing) Well...looks like somebody's been eating his spinach. (to the nurse) Oh no, it's okay folks, it's all right...the shows not over...but there will be a short intermission. (he walks right up to Angel's face, then turns and leaves the room) Don't want to miss the second act, all kinds of excitement. ANGEL: I'll be there. HOSPITAL - CONTINUOUS Giles, Xander, Willow and Oz rush worriedly into the ER. They are met by Angel. GILES: How is she? ANGEL: She's fine. She's asleep. OZ: Well, you seem all right too? ANGEL: Yeah... XANDER: What happened? WILLOW: When we left her she was fine...did Faith... ANGEL: Faith's out of the picture. Buffy put her in a coma. XANDER: And... ANGEL: Buffy cured me...made me... GILES: You fed off her?! ANGEL: Yes. GILES: How much? ANGEL: She's gonna be fine. WILLOW: She won't be a vampire? ANGEL: No. She didn't feed off me. XANDER: Well, it's just good to know when the chips are down and things look grim you'll feed on the girl that loves you to save your own ass. GILES: Better go Angel. We'll watch over her. ANGEL: I don't want to... GILES: (forcefully) The sun will be up soon. Angel thinks for a moment before slowly walking to the exit. XANDER: Gosh, I'm really gonna miss him when he leaves town. GILES: Let's find out how Buffy's doing... They walk towards the front desk. FAITH'S APARTMENT - DAY - CONTINUOS Everything is packed in boxes...the place is a mess. Buffy walks through it with her arms crossed looking around. A cat jumps onto the bed and meows. BUFFY: Who's gonna look after him? FAITH: It's a she. (Faith walks up behind her) And aren't these things supposed to take care of themselves? BUFFY: A higher power guiding us? FAITH: I'm pretty sure that's not what I meant. BUFFY: There's something I'm supposed to be doing. FAITH: Oh yeah...miles to go. Little Miss Muffett counting down from 7-3-0. BUFFY: Great...riddles. FAITH: Sorry...it's my head...lot of new stuff. The cat is on the bed...it flashes from a man on a hospital bed back to the cat. Faith looks at the broken window. FAITH: They're never gonna fix this are they? BUFFY: What about you? FAITH: Scar tissue...it fades...it all fades. Buffy looks down at her open hand...Faith's bloody knife appears...then disappears. FAITH: You wanna know the deal? Human weakness...never goes away...even his. BUFFY: Is this your mind or mine? FAITH: (Laughs) Beats me. Getting towards that time. She walks towards Buffy. BUFFY: How are you going to fit all this stuff? FAITH: Not gonna...it's yours. BUFFY: I can't use all of this. FAITH: Just take what you need. Are you ready? Faith places her hand on Buffy's cheek. After a flash of white light Buffy wakes up in her hospital bed. She slowly gets out of the bed and walks across the room to Faith, still in a coma. She bends down and kisses her on the forehead. HOSPITAL - CONTINUOUS Xander paces the hallway. The others are seated against the wall. Buffy, now in her street cloths, walks towards them. They jump to their feet and move towards her. WILLOW: Buffy?! XANDER: Are you okay? GILES: How do you feel? BUFFY: Is Angel here? OZ: He had to go...it got sunny. BUFFY: Get him...get everyone. XANDER: What exactly is up? GILES: Buffy...are you sure your all right? BUFFY: I'm ready. WILLOW: Ready for what? BUFFY: (extreme close-up) War. BLACKOUT SCHOOL PROMENADE - DAY - EXTERIOR Principal Snyder stands on the stage, diploma in hand, looking out at all the empty seats. Creepy music plays. Everything is decorated and ready for graduation. LIBRARY - CONTINUOUS - DAY The gang is scattered around the library table. Angel is leaning up against a wall in the corner. Buffy is sitting in a chair a few feet away addressing the group. BUFFY: ...that's the basic plan. So am I crazy? WILLOW: Well, crazy is such a strong word. GILES: Let's not rule it out though. BUFFY: You don't think it can be done? GILES: Oh...I didn't say that...I might...but not yet. CORDELIA: I personally don't think it's possible to come up with a crazier plan. OZ: We could attack the Mayor with humus. They all look at him. CORDELIA: I stand corrected. OZ: Just keeping things in perspective. CORDELIA: Thank you. My point however, is, crazy or not...it's pretty much the only plan. Besides, it's Buffy's...slay gal...you know, little Miss likes-to-fight...so... XANDER: I think there was a yay vote buried in there somewhere. BUFFY: I'm gonna need every single one of you on board. Especially you Xander...your sorta the key figure here. XANDER: Key? Me? Okay pride...humility...and here's the mind numbing fear. What do I have to do? BUFFY: Do you remember any of your military training from when you became soldier guy? XANDER: Oww...rocket launcher? BUFFY: Rocket launcher's not gonna get it done...I mean it took a volcano to kill one of these things last time. GILES: Um...Buffy...ah...all of this is rather dependent on your being able to control the Mayor. BUFFY: Faith told me to play on his human weakness. WILLOW: Faith told you? Is that before or after you put her in a coma? BUFFY: After. WILLOW: Oh. (gives her a weird look) GILES: His weakness? BUFFY: Right. GILES: Which is? BUFFY: You know...I do all this planning...I'm in charge here...even though I'm really not at my best... GILES: Well...uh...let's...let's...um...let's think. OZ: Well Angel, you hung with him the most, was there something that he's afraid of? ANGEL: Well, he's not crazy about germs. CORDELIA: Of course, that's it, we'll attack him with germs. BUFFY: Great, we'll get him cornered, then you can sneeze on him. CORDELIA: No...no...we'll get a container of Ebola virus...and...and we...or...it doesn't have to be real...we can just get a box that says Ebola on it and...and um...chase him. (silence) With the box. XANDER: I'm starting to lean towards the humus offensive. OZ: He'll never see it comin'. ANGEL: Faith! BUFFY: Faith? ANGEL: At the hospital he was grieving...seriously crazed...and not just in the homicidal I want to be a demon way. Wesley enters the library. ANGEL: She's his weakness. BUFFY: Faith...I can work that. Wesley walks towards the group. WESLEY: You haven't an enormous amount of time. XANDER: Hey, it's Mr. states-the-obvious. BUFFY: The Council is not welcome here. I have no time for orders. If I need someone to scream like a woman...I'll give you a call. WESLEY: I'm not here for the Council...just tell me how I can help. CORDELIA: That's so classy. Isn't that just so classy?! BUFFY: It's a start. WESLEY: So there is something I can do? Besides scream like a woman. BUFFY: There's plenty, chores for everyone. Okay this is how.... MAYOR'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS The Mayor is addressing a group of vampires. MAYOR: ...this is how it's gonna lay out. The transformation is going to begin at exactly 3:28. I'll just be finishing my speech..ah..you know it's really too bad you fella's are gonna have to miss that...because I think it speaks to everyone of us. I mean...heck...I've been working on it for a hundred years...better be good. (he laughs) They'll try to run of course...and that's when I'll need you boys in flanking positions. VAMP: But sir...the sun?! MAYOR: Not a problem. LIBRARY - CONTINUOUS WESLEY: (reading from a page from the Books of Ascension) Darkness will follow...the day becomes night. BUFFY: An eclipse. WESLEY: Standard procedure for an ascension. ANGEL: That puts me back in the game. BUFFY: Yeah it does. You and Xander are going to have to work together now. Can you guys handle it? XANDER: I'm still the key guy right? BUFFY: Right. XANDER: Great, then Angel, in his non-key guy capacity, can work with me. ANGEL: What fun. XANDER: Hey...key guy still talking.... BUFFY: Oh that's good...start bickering...that's gonna work great for us. You guys are like little old ladies. MAYOR'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS MAYOR: (With a map) You'll come up through the sewers here. The important thing is containment. I'll need to feed...it's crucial in the first few minutes to sustain the change. What does that mean? No snacking...I see blood on your lips it's a visit to the wood shed for you boys. Kill...don't feed. LIBRARY - CONTINUOUS BUFFY: So how are we on volcano detail? OZ: I think we can work it out. WILLOW: Fun with chemistry. BUFFY: Xander said he should be able to get the materials. OZ: Who's gonna stoke it up? BUFFY: (To Giles) You feel up to it? GILES: I suppose it should be I...strangely fitting in a grotesque fashion. BUFFY: Okay guys, start reaching out. Giles...weapons, weapon, weapons. GILES: What about you? BUFFY: There's something I need to get. (she leaves) MAYOR'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS His office doors open and vampires begin piling out. MAYOR: Remember, fast and brutal. It's gonna be a whole new world come night fall...don't wanna weaken now. And boys....watch the swearing. CLASSROOM - INTERIOR - CONTINUOUS Xander approaches Harmony talking with a group of students. XANDER: Harmony, listen, I need to talk to you for a sec. HARMONY: You mean...in front of other people? He drags her from the room. CAFETERIA - INTERIOR - CONTINUOUS Willow approahes Percy, in his grad gown, talking to another student. PERCY: ...they serious. I'm gonna look stupid in this. WILLOW: Percy?! PERCY: (To Willow) Do I look stupid in this...be honest. WILLOW: You look great...you gotta sec? STACKS - INTERIOR Wesley and Cordelia are boxing up all of the books. They continuously look over their shoulders at each other. Finally Wesley finds it in him to speak. WESLEY: Cordelia! CORDELIA: Yes!? WESELY: You know that...when this is over... CORDELIA: Yes? WESLEY: Should we prevail...I'll be going back to England. CORDELIA: (She turns sadly) I know.... WESLEY: With Buffy no longer working for the Council there's really no place for me here. CORDELIA: (Turns to face him) I guess not. WESLEY: No....reason to stay. (he moves closer to her) CORDELIA: No. WESLEY: No. No cause to hope....I might be needed. (He moves closer, taking off his glasses) CORDELIA: Needed? WESLEY: Or wanted. CORDELIA: Wanted? They kiss...a long...very, very awkward kiss. They stop for a moment and then immediately start to kiss again...another very awkward kiss. They break apart and sigh. There is NO chemistry between the two. CORDELIA: Good luck in England. WESLEY: Um hum...yes...I'll drop you a line some time. CORDELIA: That would be neat. They go about placing the books in the boxes again...each with a disgusted look on their face. OZ'S VAN OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL - EXTERIOR Jonathan and Larry are piling materials into a shopping cart from Oz's van. Oz and Willow are in the van. OZ: Okay, put these with the others...don't touch anything. LARRY: You got it. JONATHAN: W-what do we do then? OZ: Nothing. WILLOW: Just relax, have a good time. JONATHAN: Ah...okay. LARRY: Okay, it's clear, let's move. Jonathan closes the van door and the two of them leave. WILLOW: I guess that's it. It won't be long now. OZ: You nervous? WILLOW: Only in a terrified way. OZ: We're gonna make it through this. WILLOW: Are you sure? OZ: I sound pretty sure, don't I? WILLOW: Yeah... OZ: Then I must be sure. WILLOW: Is that just a comforting way of not answering the question? They start to kiss passionately. WILLOW: How long till graduation? OZ: (Looking at his watch) A little while. They continue to kiss. GILES OFFICE - INTERIOR Buffy walks in...Angel is organizing weapons. ANGEL: Did you get what you needed? BUFFY: Yeah I did. (she looks at the weapons) This isn't gonna be enough. ANGEL: Yeah...Giles is on it. How are you? BUFFY: I heal fast...like you. So are we sure everyone's good with their positions... ANGEL: I'm not gonna say goodbye. Buffy looks at him in stunned silence. ANGEL: When we get through this...I'm just gonna go. You understand? There's just too much to... She holds her hand up to stop him. He leaves the office. Buffy takes a moment...then looks down at her hands. She opens the white cloth she is holding to reveal Faith's bloodied knife. SCHOOL PROMENADE - EXTERIOR "Pomp and Circumstance" plays as the class of '99 walk down the aisles and take their seats. Principal Snyder stands at the podium with a number of guests sitting behind him - one of them the Mayor. SNYDER - Congratulations to the class of 1999. You all proved more or less adequate. This is a time of celebration...so sit still and be quiet. (He looks into the crowd) Spit out that gum! Please welcome, our distinguished guest speaker, Richard Wilkins the third. (He, again, looks into the crowd) I saw that gesture, you see me after graduation. (he starts to clap...the parents and students join in) Willow and Oz run down the aisle. Willow takes her seat next to Buffy. WILLOW: Am I late...till we fight. The Mayor takes the podium. He pulls cue-cards from his jacket pocket and places them in front of him on the podium. He begins. MAYOR: Well...what a day this is. A special day. Today is our centennial, the one hundred anniversary of the founding of Sunnydale. And I know what that means to you kids.....not a darn thing. Because today something much more important happens...today you all graduate from High School. Today all the pain...all the work...all the excitement is finally over. And what's a hundred years of history compared to that? You know what kids.... The camera zooms in on Buffy and Willow. BUFFY: My God...he's gonna do the entire speech. WILLOW: Man, just ascend already. BUFFY: Evil! The Mayor continues. MAYOR: ...your gonna have a place in Sunnydale's history whether you like it or not. It's been a long road getting here...for you...for Sunnydale. There's been achievement....joy....good times. And there's been grief. There's been loss. Some people who should be here today....aren't. (an emotional pause) But we are. Journey's end...and what is a journey? Is it just...distance traveled...time spent. No. It's what happens on the way. It's the things that shape you. At the end of the Journey your not the same. Today is about change. Graduation doesn't just mean your circumstances change...it means you do...you ascend...to a higher level. Nothing will ever be the same. Nothing! A dark shadow covers the Mayor's face. The moon slowly begins to move over the sun...the solar eclipse begins. The Mayor lurches forward in pain. Snyder gives him a strange look. MAYOR: And so as we look back... (he again lurches from the pain) BUFFY: (To herself) Come on... MAYOR: We...we must all... (he throws his head back and releases a gut-wrenching scream) It has begun...my destiny. (he picks up his cue-cards and begins flipping through them) It's a little sooner then I expected...I had this whole section on civic pride...but I guess we'll just skip to the big finish. The Mayor begins to change form...his face begins to morph...to buldge out. His cloths rip from his body as his body begins to grow. He ascends into a giant, 60 foot, serpent-like demon. The demon lets out a monstrous roar. The parents in the back begin to scream and run...the students stand but remain where they are, looking up at the creature in awe. A large group of the Mayor's vampires form at the bottom of the stairs ready to block the students. BUFFY: NOW! On Buffy's command all of the student's remove their graduation gowns to show a hidden arsenal of weapons: crosses, axes, stakes, swords, flame throwers, etc. BUFFY: Flame units! Larry and a few others aim the flame throwers at the demon and open fire...it has little effect...but seems to hold it back. XANDER: First wave! (Many students raise cross bows) FIRE! They fire the weapons...to no seen effect to the demon-like Mayor (who continues to roar). The Mayor swoops down and plucks one student up in his open jaws...crushing him. SNYDER: This is...this is simply unacceptable. Some students begin to run and are met and attacked by the waiting vampires. Oz notices. OZ: Xander! XANDER: Bow men! Oz and another small group of students pick up bows and begin lighting arrows on fire. XANDER: FIRE! They fire, dusting two or three of the on coming vamps. The Mayor-demon throws a student into the crowd. BUFFY: Fall back! XANDER: Fire! More fiery arrows are launched into the air. The vamps turn to retreat from the attack only to be cut off. Angel, Wesley, Percy and a large group of students are armed to the teeth and are standing in their way. The two groups collide. -- Angel fights off a few vamps hand to hand. -- Wesley attempts to charge a vamp only to be quickly bowled over...he goes crashing to the ground. -- Larry's flame thrower dies...the creature sends him flying through the air with a swipe of his tail...likely dead. Angel -- more hand to hand combat. Principal Snyder looks up at the former Mayor. SNYDER: This is not orderly. This is not disciplined! Your on my campus buddy...and when I say I want quiet...I mean... The Mayor-demon plunges at Snyder and crunches him between his jaws. Buffy and Xander look on in alarm. BUFFY: Fall back...get back.... (to Willow) Go! WILLOW: Good luck. (she runs off) BUFFY: Xander, take 'em down! XANDER: (Addressing the troops) Everyone...hand to hand....go....go....move....move.... VAMP: Get the kids! As the vamps begin to move up the stairs an army of students move down towards them. The vamps stop in fear. The groups collide. All hell breaks loose. -- Harmony is grabbed and fed on by a vamp. -- Jonathan throw his body at another vamp screaming. -- Xander screams out orders. -- Angel continues to fight hand to hand. -- Cordy dusts a vamp with a stake. -- Wesley is still lying on the ground wincing in pain as people run over his fallen body. -- WESLEY: (in sever pain) Get some help here? The Mayor-demon looks down at the crowd. Something comes into his line of vision. Buffy is standing in front of him. He looks down at her. She is holding Faith's bloody knife up at the huge creature. BUFFY: You remember this? I took it from Faith. Stuck it right in her gut. Just slid in her like she was butter. (the demon glares at her) You want to get it back from me....Dick!? Buffy starts to run. She runs down the path and inside the school...the Mayor-demon rumbling behind her...smashing through the front window and any wall that is in his way. Buffy turns into the library...she continues to run up the stairs and through the stacks...smashing out the back window onto the grass. The huge serpent-like demon smashes through the library doors...taking the remaining wall with him. He finds himself in a room strapped full of explosives. The Mayor-demon looks at the room in dismay. MAYOR-DEMON: (Thundering voice) WELL GOSH.... Buffy runs towards Giles. Giles pushes the trigger down and the library explodes into flames...followed by simular explosions around the school. The vamps dusted: the exhausted , bloodied, surviving students look on. FRONT OF SCHOOL - EXTERIOR Fire trucks, police cars and ambulances cover the scene. Student's and the likes are scattered everywhere. A person is being wheeled out on a gurney...his neck in a brace...it's Wesley. WESLEY: Oww...ah...ow. If...if I could just get something for the pain...it's...it's rather a lot of pain actually. Aspirin...anyone...ow...ah...perhaps I could just be knocked unconscious. (he is lifted into the ambulance) The scene changes to Buffy and Xander walking by the ambulance. XANDER: We got off pretty cheap considering. BUFFY: It looks like we did. She is looking around...obviously for Angel. Xander notices. XANDER: He made it through the fight...I guess maybe he took off after. He gives her a reassuring smile and walks away. Giles walks by him on his way to Buffy and pats him on the arm. GILES: (To Xander) Good job. He walks towards Buffy and lightly takes hold of her arm. GILES: You all right? BUFFY: I'm tired... GILES: I should imagine so...it was quite a couple of days. BUFFY: I haven't processed everything yet...my brain isn't really functioning on a higher level. It's pretty much: fire bad, tree pretty. GILES: Understandable. Well, when it's working again congratulate it on a good campaign...you did very well. BUFFY: Thank you, I will. GILES: I...um...I fretted this out of the wreckage...it may not interest you, but... (he pulls her diploma out of his jacket pocket and hands it to her) ...I'd say you earned it. She is genuinely touched. Giles looks around at the aftermath of the day (still darkened by the eclipse). GILES: There's a certain...um...dramatic irony attached to all of this. A syncrinicity that boarders on...pre-destination one might say... BUFFY: Fire bad, tree pretty. GILES: Oh yes, sorry. I'll go and attend to Wesley...see if he's still...um...whimpering. He walks off towards the ambulance. Buffy feels someone watching her...she turns to see Angel standing in the shadows...they both look at each other for a long moment. Angel slowly turns and disapears into the smoke. Xander, Willow and Oz are sitting off in the distance in front of the school. Cordy walks towards them. CORDELIA: Well, that was the most fun you could have without having any fun. WILLOW: What about the part when we kicked some demon ass...I didn't mind that. XANDER: Here, here. Buffy walks over and joins the gang. BUFFY: You guys wanna take off. (she looks at the school) I think we've pretty much done everything we can. CORDELIA: I'm for it. WILLOW: (To Buffy) Are you okay? BUFFY: Yeah...I'm okay...I could use a little sleep though. WILLOW: Yeah... BUFFY: If someone would just wake me up when it's time to go to college...that would be great. OZ: Guys...take a moment to deal with this...we survived. BUFFY: It was a hell of a battle. OZ: Not the battle....High School. They all fall silent. OZ: We're taking a moment. Buffy and Willow get to their feet and begin to walk away. OZ: And we're done. They all walk away arm and arm. XANDER: Schools done....that is so cool. WILLOW: Why do demons even come here anymore...don't they know... (Fades out) The Camera zooms in on a half burnt Sunnydale High '99 yearbook. It says: The Future is Ours! BLACKOUT
