Introduction (Pengenalan)

Fungi are a large group of plants that are not green like the other plants that we know. This is because they contain no chlorophyll, and cannot make their own food from sunlight like most green plants do. They depend on living or dead substances to supply them with food to allow them to grow. One type of fungi is the mushrooms. Many fungi and mushrooms are also poisonous, and a few of them can be eaten as food. Some fungi that grows on living substances are parasitic and some even cause diseases, for example the skin disease ringworm is caused by a fungus growing on the skin. However many types of fungi and mushrooms are also plants of medicinal value. The well know penicillin is a medicine that is made from a fungi. Most fungi used in traditional medicine are mushrooms.

Kulat adalah sesuatu kumpulan besar tumbuhan tetapi tidak berwarna hijau seperti tumbuhan biasa yang kita kenali. Ini adalah sebab ia tidak menggandungi klorofil, dan ia tidak boleh membuat makanan daripada sinaran matahari seperti tumbuhan hijau yang lain. Mereka perlu bahan hidup atau mati untuk membekal mereka dengan makan supaya mereka boleh membiak. Cendawan ialah sejenis kulat. Banyak jenis kulat dan cendawan beracun, tetapa ada sebilangan cendawan boleh dimakan. Ada juga kulat yang hidup diatas benda hidup dan menjadi parasit dan ada yang menyebabkan penyakit, sebagai contoh, penyakit kulit iaitu kurap disebabkan oleh sejenis kulat yang hidup di atas kulit. Banyak juga jenis tumbuhan kulat dan cendawan yang mempunyai nilai perubatan. Ubat penicillin adalah sejenis ubat yang terkenal yang dihasilkan daripada sejenis kulat. Kebanyakkan kulat yang digunakan sebagai ubat tradisi adalah cendawan.
