PINOY PEONS
A Solo Exhibition by
Platon Tony Varquez
February 5 to 15, 1999 at Galerie Y, 4/f Bldg A,
SM MegaMall
Mandaluyong City, Philippines
On
Friday, Feb 5 at 6:00 pm, Platon "Tony" Varquez opens his collection of oil
paintings entitled "Pinoy Peons" at Galerie Y, SM MegaMall.
"Peon",
a term commonly used in describing the unskilled workers, is greatly emphasized in its
degree of importance and contribution to the development of this nation. Varquez
remarked, "Without those hands and feet, without those muscles and sweat, where will
this country now be?" This is what this collection portrays. Done in a
cubist manner, Varquez reflects the effort, sweat and sufferings endured by the Filipino
outdoor laborer. A tribute to the common workers, this collection re-creates every
contortion and contraction, a sea of swollen tissue that some may remember even
experiencing in the past.
