While
Cuba does have its own currency, the Cuban Peso, it is basically
useless in the hands of tourists, the real currency of Cuba
is the US Dollar. Cuba pays millions of dollars in commissions
on the world currency market to acquire dollars.

US
DOLLARS
|
|
|
| Take
as much as you want. Cuba does NOT limit the amount
of US dollars that you can bring into Cuba; however, they
do limit the amount of US dollars that can be taken out
to US$5,000. If you are bringing in more than US$5,000
and you think you will be leaving with more than US$5,000
it is best to declare it. Be prepared to present your
passport when paying with or converting $100 dollar bills.
I would suggest you bring $10 and $20 as they are easily
accepted by all locations. |

TRAVELLERS
CHEQUES
|
|
|
This
is a safer than cash, but you must get checks that are
issued by a non-US financial institution, such as US Dollar
MasterCard® Travellers Cheques from Thomas Cook, which
charges a 2% commission. Most major hotels will have no
problem cashing travellers cheques, however, you will
be charged a 3%-4% commission. You will need to present
your passport when you cash travellers cheques.
Tourists traveling from the US basically need US dollars.
We have heard that there are places that accept US issued
credit cards, but don't count on this as your only money
source. You will usually have to supply your passport
number or other ID that will be recorded when paying with
a US$100 bill. Cuba pays about US$300 million in commissions
to other foreign currencies. In 1999, the Cuban government
trying to red themselves of the dollar dependency tried
to embrace the euro. |

CREDIT
CARDS
|
|
|
|
Don't
plan on using your credit cards to fund your visit if
the cards were issued by an US financial institutions.
Some people are lucky enough to cross over the Canadian
or Mexican border to open up a bank account and acquire
a credit/debit card, however, I wouldn't rely solely
on credit cards while you are in Cuba.
