The worse thing about Chinese is that there is 2 versions - the newer simplified version China Chinese and Singapore uses and the older version other overseas Chinese use. Well, my hair is dark chocolate in color but I have this concentrated patch of very light brown hair, sometimes blondish sometimes silverish but not white right behind my fringe in the middle of my head - a bit like that skunk hair thingee that was rather popular 4 years back. I've always joked that when I part my hair in the centre, it looks like I walked under some building where someone dripped paint on my head ...Question is should I dye my hair to cover up that strange bit of hair that makes me look like I dyed my hair or should I spend the money on more manga books (I could do a parting on the side and keep it hidden) ... Wanted to set up a booth in law school with camera, hand crafted card and chocolates and roses for sale on Valentines and Christmas but gave up after tutors threatened to "tax" us. MD is quite funny. The eechi level is tolerable, pretty much like a typical shonen manga. The art is nice tho' and the jackets are really cute. Once you remove the jacket, the book cover instead of merely being a monochrome copy of the jacket actually contains witty remarks. It was Alv's recommendation, he said most people don't believe it's a SHE who does the art.I usually prefer shounen for storyline and shoujo for art. I don't have the complete set of LH, it's still ongoing ... GB is gorgeous and you like Mitoban too ... *drool* Vagabond was boring at first but it gets better and better. EIJI was initially good but towards the middle started to slack. The ending is good tho' ... so it's quite OK. Yuu's art is nice but you're right, the tried and test formula of one girl everyone wants is a little blippp ... And Komore is under the dappled shade. There's another story in the manga artist's previous collections which explain the trainee teacher's infatuation with the girl. Very sad, it's actually more touching than the series itself coz it shows the reason she is always on the "run" coz people view her as a monster. Actually when I first started this list, it was more comprehensive with ratings and all but it got a little tiring ... as you notice, I'm starting even to skimp on the description bit as well ... so lazy ~_~;; I am pretty fortunate I guess coz I have access to the Taiwanese translations and Singaporean ones as well. But I always find the Jap selection prettier and better printed. I just can't read Hirigana (can guess about 80% of the kanji tho') but I'm trying to learn. Alv makes the best recommendations ... most of my manga I buy either coz I like or he recommends and I find I like it. It smacks of myopia but when I took out my no degrees but slightly factored for aesthic glasses ... things are somewhat slightly better ... so what the hell is it? But everything has its time and place. It is a military band afterall. I guess I liked the "band" part more than the "military" part. But if you like drills, you might be hard pressed to find any military bands in JC tho' ... in my time (aeons ago) RJ and VJ had pretty good symphonic bands. My card just requires $30 more to make the grade (I used to lose my stamped cards and having decided to guard this card with my life I have managed to fill it up ... ooh, the earlier wasted cards ;_;). Anyhow, I bought 3 books about $80 stuff last nite i.e. one worth $29 and the other two being $26 each. The shop girl offered to let me use the voucher for one of the $26 books but I declined saying I didn't want to waste the chance to get more stamps and I could pick up the voucher later. After I pay she then tells me the card system promotion is over and she will fill out my old card but I don't get new stamps ... DUH!!! Didn't I ask her not to use the voucher for the books now coz I didn't want to waste my chances to stamp stuff? Do I not speak English or what? Why didn't she tell me the promotion was over? Anyway I decided to be nice so I just gave her a weak smile. Anyway I then decided what the heck ... I had left out one more artbook so half of my newly acquired voucher went to that. But the whole incident still does not amuse me ... I am soooo broke, and have sunk further into poverty. It is still very freaky. I am used to a bustling Singapore with heavy traffic and all, but last nite, Orchard Road our prime shopping area looked pretty much at odds. The shops were rather empty but the roadside cafeterias were full. I wonder what this means. I'm popped, think I will skip lunch and nap once I am done with this post. --------------------------------------------------------------- [long meaningless ramblings from here, you were warned ...] Yesterday was pretty uneventful yet fun. Before picking up my artbooks, I decided I would just grab books, eat dinner take the bus home ... so I take a train to Taka and buy my books, pick up a strawberry shortcake and started walking to the bus-stop. Halfway tho' I feel like I am not having fun so notwithstanding the fact I was not in the most comfortable pair of court shoes, I decide I would walk home regardless of the fact it would be a 3 hour walk. Of course I gave up halfway, it was so dark once I reached the British Commission I decided I won't risk getting killed and hopped on the first bus that came along. Besides my shoes were killing me.But I was pretty embarassed coz my thighs were beginning to ache somewhat. Am I getting old? I used to walk from Plaza Sing to the British Commissions (2x the distance yesterday and not as much an ache ... I must be growing old) Aihee, but I so love walking (and basketball). I remember walking so much in Prague and Paris I killed my old pair of track shoes in those 2 weeks faster than I did for the 2 years I owned them. I could walk for hours on end without grumbling ... either I am getting old, the weather in Singapore sucks or I should not wear my court shoes if I intend to walk (I contemplated walking down Orchard Road barefooted but figured I didn't want to be arrested). I used to walk to school for JC ... it was a 20 minute saunter from my house so that was fun ... except the time the shoe heel broke after orientation dinner prompting me to walk home barefooted and mind you considering Holland Village is full of people, I earned quite a number of stares that nite ... But I think I really walked when I got to uni ... I love law fac coz it's situated at the back of the campus near Pasir Panjang which consists of the port, a park and a few private houses. The place was (altho development of the area has unfortunately begun) relatively wild and untouched by Singaporean standards and so I loved to walk home along the shaded paths with the small narrow widing roads and overgrowths from place to place. If I cut through the campus and came out by medicine's side of the campus i.e. no nice view tho' and (also haven't seen any cute doctors tho'), I would only need walk about 1 hour to get home but I so liked Pasir Panjang I would take the long way and spend about 1 hour more climbing the hill and trekking along the narrow footpaths past all those houses facing the port. If anyone gets to law school I suggest you try it provided you have a comfortable pair of shoes or sandals and the place isn't all developed yet (Mun, you're so lucky to stay there and at least I think they'll leave half of kent ridge park alone). It used to be quite fun coz I would mostly take 200 home from campus on the days I didn't have time for the long walk or it was too late and this fav route of mine follows the 200 bus route. (95 and the internal bus was a faster ride and less walking but I didn't like cramming with all the medicine and science students if I could help it). Now 200 is not a popular service so by the end of first year, all the drivers knew me ... and they used to be so amused by the fact I was trying to walk the whole distance. Some days I would give up halfway and hop on the bus, some days I would actually walk all the way home ... it really depended on my feet. Ahh, those were the days ... as you can tell, I really miss being a student with /that/ much time on my hands ~_~;; I love nature altho it won't hurt if Singapore's temperatures and humid levels were more forgiving ... But I have to say 2 things before I end this meaningless grumble and catch a nap and they both have to do with my trip home yesterday (when it got too dark to walk anymore) ... I saw this woman yesterday on the bus who looked like she was about 50. She wore this cheongsam like top (not unlikely what you might find on D on a less drama-queen day), skin tight pants, a bright orange red scarf, heavy makeup and a hair extension which was wavy and all you know like the kind of hair they do for Victorian dolls ... I know this is rude but I nearly burst out laughing on the bus! 2nd thing I am most disgusted with whoever did this anthrax bacteria attack. One side of me says the *** should be thrown into a lab and used as a test subject for the rest of his life (think the Fly II) but the other side of me wonders if this is our punishment for researching on how to create biological warfare in the first place. Look if the first idiot didn't think "Oh wow, this morning I'm going to create a dangerous virus" how could this whole mess have started? Granted, there will always be evil men (read terrorirsts for now) who treat human life lightly and use all these poisons and virus mutations as arsernal but who the heck financed some brain-nek to create such research in the first place where they could be picked up by terrorists and such? If you look hard enuff and I do not mean to be insensitive to those at risk now, heck everyone in the world is at risk ... who was the first people that opened Pandora's box? Maybe the world or the civilised world as we know it should consider carefully ... we do reap what we sow. News wise, certain countries are getting jitty over internal protests over American support and one has turned around from its earlier position at the "exhortation" of its people. Humbug ... I used to believe people were sensible ... this confirms it is not the case. I personally think that if a war could be averted by sensible negotiations it would be best. If wars would only ensure that the guilty are punished and religions bring tolerance of people of the world ... of course that is the ideal, but this IS NOT AN IDEAL world no? My fac library only had two. The main uni library was much bigger ... then again we only have 600 students for all 4 years of law school in Singapore. But I love the law lib ... (and this is an old sore point of every NUS law student) problem being so did everyone from other facs. You can't even begin to imagine my fac's unhappiness over the matter. I still don't understand to this day why engineering students insist on using our classrooms to study and hogging our lib when law students ourselves find it a squeeze (altho we don't fight for space among ourselves). The worst thing? These engineering students would then complain we were noisy and disturbing them ... the nerve of them I tell you! Granted, their courses have more students and the law lib doesn't really belong exclusively to law fac but I have only one thing to say ... as it is, the uni builds more rooms for engineering students (and is continuing to build more), raised the fees for law to their level of fees so they didn't have to raise engineering's (when engineering is clearly a more expensive course), promotes Engineering over law etc. etc. So in response to any engineering student who complains about how unfriendly law students are, I say - GO FLY A KITE!!! Ugh, I know I really should stop this ranting since I technically lack locus standi, but just like the RJ-AC rivalry (which has taken a more friendly turn) this is an old feud which bugs all law students, past and present!!! Back to saner stuff ... I love the smell of old books ... there used to be this store opposite the Supreme Courts in the public prosecutor's building that used to sell very old books for a good price. I bought the "Fall of Pompeii" for $6, a steal considering the book was printed in 1870. I wished I got hold of "To Kill a Mockingbird" tho' ... I can't find the book anywhere now ... guess I have no choice but to buy the student's edition when I find it again. I know of someone who got the hardcover edition from that store ... lucky her. Anyhow, Leareth be careful ... you don't want to be like someone ... When I was in primary school, I loved the boiled sausages that my math teacher for P5 and P6 used to sell for the annual funfair festival. It was just simple boiled sausages but eating them hot was an annual treat. When I got to secondary school I loved the fried chicken rice. But what I really liked was buying lotong and such from the Malay store. The lady there used to call me sayang and my $1 shares were larger than my friends' $1.50 shares ... hee hee ... I wonder how the lady is doing now? Then there was the school cat which used to follow me all around the school. It was a lovely white kitten ... kawaii ne. In JC the celery and mash potatoes were delicious so as the home made ice lemon teas from the canteen altho I used to sneak out with friends to Ghim Moh for lunch ignoring school rules on the fact we were not to eat at Ghim Moh unless we had ended school for the day. In uni, I loved the char kway tiao at arts and the western food at Biz Ad. Once I was complaining to Edward the guy at Biz Ad that I was bored and wanted something different and he made a omelette with cheese, bananas and berries ... yummy!!! Now I'm into the sardine curry puffs and teh alia at the festival market Lao pah sa, opposite my office building ... *drool* but I promised Nic I would be good and eat something non spicy but warm for dinner ... so I had porridge instead. *_* I want satay from stall 6 at the roadside ... must ask Bel and Euph whether they want to eat that again soon. And I want Ramli burgers!!! I make it a point to eat at least 2 everytime I'm in KL!!! And this ends this utterly meaningless post. Now for more sombre stuff. Further to what was said here, people may be interested to know the 3 religions seemingly involved in this brawl at the Middle East are actually descended from the same root. All 3 religions recognise that they are linked to one man, Abraham the father of Ishmael and Issac . Issac is the father of the Jews from whom the Christianity derives its roots and Ishmael is the father of the Arabs. So technically, the 3 religions are interlinked and all teach love and tolerance. You may be interested to know that in Muslim marriage law, a Muslim man may only marry a Muslim woman or a woman of the holy book i.e. Christians or Jews (altho a Muslim woman should only marry a Muslim man because the head of the family should be a Muslim). It's very sad now that Jews, Christians and Muslims so hate each other. It's very sad right now that things have fallen to such a state. I think the fight against terrorism is inevitable and is a necessary evil. Innocents will be affected but it's more cruel when people exploit religion to their own benefit. I've read a few reports on the villagers in Afghanistan trying to move to the cities or borders but running out of money and food halfway. It's very sad that a lot of them had chosen to run to the towns instead of staying where they were. Consider this, if you could force defenceless civillians to "camp" near military targets, and such people were killed in attacks on the targets ... that could turn the situation to your advantage no? I usually stay away from comments on politics since there are a number of people around me are politically linked and the culture in Singapore is not to get involved in politics but sometimes you can't help but wonder, with each government controlling the news and information avaliable to its people to their own advantage (whether with ill purpose or to keep social "order") is it any wonder there is so much confusion and hatred in the world ... also if children are brought up by their parents to hate a certain type of people is it any surprise at the end of the day, there is so much misunderstanding in this world? If anything be said, have you ever seen a brown cow discriminate against a spotted one or a black cow? Humans have always prided themselves on being "superior". Is this ability to discriminate, prejudge and predetermine really symptoms of "superiority"? Then again, eating dinner always makes me think too much ... ... imprisoned within my blood ... But people here are listless and even the papers announced that this is the worst recession the country has had since independence (I guess only the Great Depression topped it). I know I can't do anything about it by worrying and it's more important to prod on but it's difficult not to get a little down by the fact things look bleak at the moment. Taxis usually hate lawyers coz we only commute from Shenton to Court and back but there was such long queues outside the Courts today, indicating that business was seriously down. Oh well, I know there's nothing I can do about it by moping but it's still nagging at the back of my head like some irritating mosquito. Well, we will see how it goes. The only thing that really worries me is that this country is not really self sufficient like most countries are. We don't grow anything, we just buy and sell and make $ as middlemen. As such, if there is no trading ... you know ... it's not like we can sell food or anything and buy the same amongst ourselves on this coconut island. Considering how this was somewhat all started by you know what, you really have to wonder what the heck those morons were thinking about ... but then again as someone once said that this is the perverse humour of humans at work, nothing is more 'fun' than to spread misery around. I don't think humans will ever learn but then again the idea of having to live thru Judgment Day is NOT appealing either. I guess I'll be okay. But basically, it's about our young hero joining the team fighting for social order in Japan when the shoguns are oppressing the people. Or something like that. I can read the language my manga come in pretty well but when it comes to Japanese historically related stuff I don't entirely get the picture, like with RK. Anyhow, he is a sweetie pie at heart. He wants to join the group to avenge his parents who were brutally murdered and because his brother is also part of the group. He is accepted, but only as a page to the guy who heads the fighting section of the team (the other commander is pretty fond of our young hero and is nice to him). The guy in charge (gomen, I don't know the Jap names at this point) of your young buddy seems to be unduly harsh with him but as his protege (the pretty guy with the long hair and the pig notes), it's because he does not want the young child to become a killing machine. Nevertheless, due to his rashness and innocent outlook in life, our little friend is always getting into trouble. The ninja who is in charge of taking care of him appears to despise him but is actually pretty fond of his young charge (he was not happy to be made babysitter but took it on anyway). To save a little girl who turns out to be the page of a geisha, our young hero gets involved in a fight with some bullies. The team who is out for a walk pretend to be hooligans themselves and rescue the girl. Unfortunately as his identity was accidentally exposed when our young friend called him by name, the pretty guy slaughtered the hooligan thus jolting our hero to the fact peace comes at a price. In book 4, it turns a little gruesome coz it seems the ninja's identity has been exposed altho he has always been doing his spying as a woman. To save him, his sister disguises like he does to take the rap. The team is very sad as she leaves as they know her fate but they must "cover" that exposure. Our young hero rants at the ninja for not caring about his sister but the ninja just ignores him. True to our worst fears, the shoguns brutally abuse and murder the ninja's sister mistaking her for him (whether they did more than that is debatable) and fling her body into the rain where the ninja retrieves her corpse. He cries and decides to break his ninja code by extracting revenge for his sister. Under the rules of the team, they are not allowed to act out of selfish reasons but the whole team is so distraught by her death they band together, unofficially to attack the shogun's secret meeting point where she was killed. Lots of fighting etc. but just as the ninja is about to kill the man who ordered his sister's humilation and death (they think the ninja is the spirit of the dead woman because he went dressed as a woman again), our young friend stops him saying his sister would not want him to murder in cold blood so the ninja just knocks the shogun out. I really hate it when I can't get the Jap names ... ugh!!! Where did you find the translations? I need it so I don't keep calling the characters the "pretty guy with the pig" and "young hero" etc. Sigh, I really must learn Jap ne ... hope this helped a bit (will do more decent write up over weekend) ... imprisoned within my blood ... Tuesday I like Pocky too but I eat more of the Men's Pocky version which my boss likes too. But I'm doing my best not starting the craze again coz the last time we shared tibbits, I gained way too much in the fat tummy area. Uni life is a time to get to know people, there are people you will befriend only on a superficial level and there will be people who will be your best bud for life. If it makes you feel better, take it from a uni survivor (or at least I think I did) that the initial growing pains will be brief unless you choose to be an idiot who stalks others or bitch about people to elevate yourself. I didn't know anyone in uni when I first got in either. I was in engineering in college so when I went to uni, it was like freak out time since the people in law were mostly from medicine and from arts. It was weird but I was the only one from my college from engineering in law. Most of my gal-friends outside my fac had decided to do their education overseas or in a differnt uni i.e. no one was doing law in my uni, so I really didn't know a single soul in law fac. In Singapore, guys have to do NS, as such all guys deferred uni for 2 years ie. no guy friends in law either. Trust me, I was like ... freaking out coz rumours were law fac was a bitchy clich-ish place and you had to be rich and good-looking to be accepted (which I was most definitely not). For the record, it is NOT true on both counts. Anyway here I was, in this room signing up for law camp with the girls from either a different college or from different faculties, none of them I knew ... and not knowing a single guy in the room ... Mulling around, I saw this girl looking rather uncomfortable and standing at the door so I walked up, held out a hand and said "Hi, this sounds cheesy but my name is *** what's yours?" She burst out laughing and we became friends for the whole of law camp. We then turned around to other people and joked "since we're signing up for torture camp, let's make friends ..." Within minutes, we had a rather big group of people who had met for the first time but was chatting away. It turns out that most people are quite scared too and worried. Of course there will be awful people like this guy who stalked my friends in year 2 and there will be friends who stab you in the back and friends whom you didn't think were so dependable but turn out to be but hey, that's life right? Really, just be yourself. Most people in uni, even if they don't like someone very much are civil unless you really act like a jerk. I don't know why I am so attracted to this figure who appeared less than 5 times in the manga and whose face was only shown once in the anime although you see Clow's back a little more. I guess the fact he is so mysterious started it. Then when I read about what a fruitcake he was, that's when I fell cruncher and all for this character called Clow Reed. Not the handsome Touya, not the sweet Yukito nor the noble Yue. I didn't even really feel that much for Eriol. It was Clow. I bought the whole anime series and manga for Clow. Started when I bought the CCS summary book as a collection for my manga collection. I had heard mixed reviews on CCS when it first started, way before it became an anime and was hesistant about it. But chance would have it, the first page I opened had to have Clow's writeup and all Clamp's sketches on him. That "I don't care" look was infectious. Despite my pathetic grasp of Chinese esp the olden style of writing I read the write up over and over again. Carried the book to dinner, read it the whole nite ... oggled the Clow pictures, practised drawing them and before the nite was over, planned a mini Clow Reed altar. Sigh, next thing I know, this blog was very much the magician's too.I just love Clow's cold mannerisms, his reserved smile and fruitcake ways. It's getting worse, now I even have a little Clow pin ... thankies to Meia and Anie for pointing it out to me at the fair. Now if it is possible, I just wanna find Jap fanart on Clow-sama. I wonder if my obsession matches Val's and Rein's. To a certain extent, my Tatsumi obsession lies a little dusty. Speaking of which, Val, do what you like. If you force yourself to pick up your second fav toy coz others feel you should, you'll only end up hating it. I really need to update my Clow site ...
