Vernon attended Bishop's Theological College in Calcutta - affiliated to Serampore University in the 1950s. He went through
theological training in Calcutta in India with a view to ordination. Vernon was at Bishop's College, Calcutta from June 1950
to April 1953.
Bishop's College, Kolkata was founded by Thomas Fanshawe Middleton, the first Anglican Bishop of Calcutta.
When Vernon was in Calcutta he was the life and soul of the student community in this vibrant Indian city. He was elected
President of the Ceylonese Students Association in West Bengal. He acted and directed drama productions in Calcutta,
participating in many a musical show. He is remembered with affection by many of his Indian friends in Calcutta.
Mr. A.F.Thompson, Acting Principal of Bishop's College wrote in 1968 that Vernon 'decided not to proceed with Ordination.'
Vernon left Calcutta for Ceylon.
