This pedal first attracted my attention in a guitar magazine ad where it claimed that it could make any guitar sound like almost any other guitar. Of course, this claim is quite overstated, it won't make a Strat sound like a Les Paul or vice versa. However, the Very-Tone has two very neat things in one package.

First, it's a great clean boost pre-amp. I've used it for just a general lead boost many times and it's been very effective in that area.

Secondly, it acts as a notch filter like the Gibson Varitone circuit, cutting or boosting certain frequencies based on your choice. The 'menu' below is a scan of the instruction paper on the bottom of the unit. I've found the 'A' and 'C' settings the best with my guitars, aside from the bypass mode which I used most often.

My pedal is an older one. I even got to talk briefly to the late Charlie Stringer when I ordered it. The newer ones are sort of an Irish green color instead of chrome with green lettering and are supposed to be 'true bypass'. I haven't noticed any 'tone sucking problems with mine though. All in all, I recommend this pedal both as a clean pre-amp boost and for its interesting tonal variations.
