DOD VibroThang FX22

DOD VibroThang FX22

This is an oddball modulation pedal. I bought it after hearing one being used in a friends rig. I haven't heard another pedal quite like it. It doesn't sound like other 'rotary speaker' pedals like the Univibe, other vibrato pedals, or phaser pedals. But it does manage to pull off a very nice Leslie (aka rotary) speaker simulation.

The 4 knobs are Speed, Depth, Doppler, and Image. Speed is essentially how fast the simulated speaker is spinning. One of the interesting and attractive things about this pedal is how slow it can 'turn'. Depth affects the amount of volume drop-out on each turn. This also has a very wide range which allows for some amazingly weird sounds if you want. Doppler is that sort of a "train passing by" sound that makes the guitar seem like it's moving. The Image knob provides both an EQ'ing and feedback/resonance effect.

The pedal can produce phaser and vibrato sounds but, in experimenting with it, I found them less than satisfying as compared to those available in the V-Amp. However, it really excels at the rotating speaker simulation and I'll slip it in last in my effects chain when I want that kind of sound. Since the pedal isn't 'true bypass' it does suck tone a little bit but it isn't too noticeable. Also, it will kill a 9v rather quickly and start sounding awful as it does so a wall-wart is almost necessity with it.
