Tankers are inspected by Oil Majors and Port State Control officers to ensure that the tanker is operated in a safe way
in accordance with valid rules and regulations.
During an inspection of a very large crude carrier (VLCC) an inspector will:
- climb 9,997 meters (32,800 ft) (Mount Everest is 8.848m)
- inspect 300,000 square km of steel (equals 1,500 tennis courts)
- inspect 1,200 km of welding (equals the distance Copenhagen - Paris)
