Species Native To New England

Rhododendron prinophyllum, the Roseshell azalea, is native to New England. In fact, there is a large stand in the park near Pittsfield, MA. This azalea was formerly classified as Rhododendron roseum.
The cultivar shown above has flowers much larger than is typical of the species in the wild. Take a pictorial tour of the Andover Bird Sanctuary to see a more typical example of the Roseshell azalea.
