Smash and Tear

This is the third kata taught to adult students at the dojo at which I train.  It's a nice short one.  The bunkai application is pretty viscous (not that Gekisai Dai-Ichi doesn't have it's share of that...).

1. I've deliberately omitted a great many of the important nuances. The fine details of the katas may change pretty often, and they may even differ between dojos (that's my own assumption), but the broad strokes outlined below should, pretty much, stay the same. Remember, your sensei will tell you how to do the kata. After you think you've got it down pat, he'll come along, telling you about the little nuances. Then he'll come along correcting stances that you thought you must have perfected by now! It's all part of karate. LOL

2. You'll notice that a lot of what's written here is not in English. You'll need to learn the terminology eventually. I figure that if, while trying to refresh your memory on your katas, you have to check out what a particular phrase means often enough, you'll learn what that phrase means. I've found a number of excellent web sites outlining the basic terminology. Links are provided below.

3. Unless otherwise indicated, all directional references are relative to the direction you are facing when you start the kata (referred to as "to the front").

Start: Yoi: Musubi dachi, hands together, palms down, left over right, at belt level
1. Take a long step forward 45 degrees to your right into migi zenkutsu dachi, chambering the right hand and covering the right hand with the left.
1a. Look left, turn left, dragging the left foot into musubi dachi.
1b. Step with the left foot, to your left, into shiko dachi, looking to your right (to front), blocking with your left hand using a vertical, cross body, circular open hand block, terminating with the left hand, palm to the right, fingers up, at your solar plexus. While blocking, strike migi jodan uraken to the front.
2. With your left foot, take long step towards the front at a 45 degree angle to the left of a line from your right foot straight to the front, ending up in hidari zenkutsu dachi, chambering the left hand and covering the left hand with the right.
2a. Look right, turn right, dragging the right foot into musubi dachi.
2b. Step with the right foot, to your right, into shiko dachi, looking to your left (to front), blocking with your right hand using a vertical, cross body, circular open hand block, terminating with the right hand, palm to the left, fingers up, at your solar plexus. While blocking, strike hidari jodan uraken to the front.
3. With your right foot, take a long step towards the front at a 45 degree angle to the right of a from your left foot straight to the front, ending up in migi zenkutsu dachi, chambering the right hand and covering the right hand with the left.
3a. Look left, turn left, dragging the left foot into musubi dachi.
4. Step forward and far to your left with your left foot, so that a line between your feet is perpendicular to a line to front. Drag your right foot up into migi hiza geri while double blocking to the front, (open handed with the palms facing the direction the hands block) right hand down and left hand up. Kick migi chudan mai geri.
5. Step straight right with your right foot. Drag your left foot up into hidari hiza geri while double blocking to the front, (open handed with the palms facing the direction the hands block) left hand down and right hand up. Kick hidari chudan mai geri.
6. Bring the left foot back into migi zenkutsu dachi, chambering both hands. Punch heiko zuki to the should joints. Bring both hands down in semi-circles to strike right fist in left hand at front.
7. With the right foot, step across to the left, pivot to the rear, blocking hidari chudan uki.
7a. Chamber both hands. Punch heiko zuki to the should joints.
8. Pivot to your right, sweeping migi ashi barai (ending up in heiko dachi) and striking migi tetsui uchi straight.
8a. Pull the right hand back to open hand chamber (simulating grabbing your opponents head and pulling to you) while punching hidari ura zuki across your body to the front. (Kiai!)
9. Sweep hidari ashi barai and strike hidari tetsui uchi straight to the rear.
9a. Pull the left hand back to open hand chamber (simulating grabbing your opponents head and pulling to you) while punching migi ura zuki across your body to the rear. (Kiai!)
10. Turn 90 degrees to your left, stepping forward into migi sanchin dachi, punching hidari chudan gyaku zuki.
11. Keeping your feet in place, turn your body 90 degrees to the right and your head an additional 90 degrees to the right (facing the front) extending both arms to the front hands open (shoulder level, right arm fully extended, palm down, left arm running across your body, palm up)
12. Step back with your left foot into migi neko ashi dachi (facing the front), while chambering the left hand (open handed, palm still up) and striking migi haito uchi with the right hand stopping (palm down) above the chambered left hand.
13. Block/strike tora uchi uki (right hand down, left hand up)
14. Sweep the left hand around in a semi-circle, terminating under the right
15. Bring left foot back to musubi dachi, twisting hands so that the left hand is on top of the right, both open with palm down, in front of the belt.
16. Hands to sides and bow
