Hello, and welcome to my website. If your looking for information on the epic poem Beowulf look no further. This website contains a summary of the epic as well as a character analysis so just take the respective links on the left side bar to get whatever information you like. I have also added a small quiz to test your knowledge on Beowulf, it's not difficult and it's only five questions long so give it a try. Furthermore as an extra for those who are up to date and have read Grendel by John Gardner I have included an essay I wrote for my English class that evaluates Grendel's life during the course of the novel.

To get started with here is a list of some facts about Beowulf that are important and may interest you.

  • No one knows who wrote Beowulf because it wasn't written in the way that literature is written now. Beowulf is an epic poem, meant to be spoken aloud thus very few of them were ever written down, and very few of them survived into modern times.
  • Beowulf is known as the first poem of the English literature.
  • The original work is believe to have been written in the year 1000.
  • The poem documents the values, questions, and attitudes of the time and explores themes that are still engaging and fascinating.
  • Beowulf is the oldest known piece of English literature.
If you're a Beowulf nut and would be interested in a game based on the epic poem play Grendel's Cave, a free multiplayer online role playing game that is not only fun but quite accurately follows the epic poem. If you are in a bind and looking for Essays on Beowulf look at some for free to help you brainstorm. Finally, if you haven't read Beowulf before or just need a little clarification read this adaptation by Dr. David Breeden, I found it was very entertaining as well as informative and if you have a hard time understanding old English you would be best suited to read this.
