Mary Ann (Golithan) & Cornelius Butcher "Neal" McGuyer

Neal was the youngest child & only son of Ann (Lee) & Thomas McGuire.
[He was my great-great-grand-uncle]
It was Neal who changed the spelling of the family name from McGuire to McGuyer.
When Mary Ann died there was no cemetery nearby, so he buried her at home, then donated the land for a community cemetery at Charleston.
Neal served in the Mexican War, and although he suffered severe wounds from which he never fully recovered, he enlisted in the Confederacy and fought in the Civil War. He was honorably discharged May 27, 1865.
Epitaph: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Rufe & Hattie McGuyer
[Rufe was a son of Neal & Mary Ann (Golithan)
McGuyer (1st wife of Neal). He was my 1st
cousin 3 times removed.]
Rufe was 13 when the Civil War broke out.
Rufe, his father and his Uncle D.S.R. George
(my great-great-grandfather) witnessed a hanging
in Charleston and were called upon to testify in
court in Hopkins County (this was before Delta was
formed out of Hopkins & Lamar Counties).
With his father serving in the Confederacy, he was
left to tend the crops. He let the weeds overtake his
fields as his interest was in the fight at hand. He
joined the Texas Home Gaurd, but never saw active duty.
Rufe lived to be 101 years of age. He was quoted as
saying this land should be "one country".
