Sarah Catherine "Kate" (Wilson) & Eddie Peterson Johnson on their Wedding Day, January 2, 1898 Kate & Eddie were married in Delta County on January 2, 1898 by J. M. Bauman, M. G. The license was issued and recorded by Eddie's brother, Sankey Thomas Johnson, County Clerk. The couple made their home in Lake Creek and reared their six surviving children, two sons died in infancy. In a letter written to me, dated January 18, 1987, Aunt Red said that Eddie was nearly grown before starting his formal education. He was able to get teaching jobs in the winter and do farm work and other odd jobs in the summer to put himself thru school. Eddie was a professor of Botanical Science and taught for fifteen years in Mississippi before returning to Texas to be with the rest of his family. He taught at Granny's Neck, near Enloe for awhile before becoming a farmer. His thirst for knowledge was so great that he was often seen in his fields guiding the plow horse and reading a book. My brother, Leo remembers Daddy (Jim) telling him the story of Granddaddy taking his horse to the pool at the end of the day for a much needed drink of water. As the horse drank, he moved deeper and deeper into the pool. When Granddaddy got home Grandma wanted to know what happened and why he was drenched from the waist down! Kate & Eddie were my paternal grandparents. Kate was born February 24, 1878 in Charleston, Delta County, Texas to Sarah Ann "Sally" (George) & John William "Billy" Wilson. Kate died March 11, 1957 in Enloe in the home of her daughter Nancy Cain. Eddie was born July 29, 1861 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi to Mary Catharine (Johnston) & Thomas H. J. Johnson. Eddie died in Terrell, Texas May 4, 1918. The couple is buried in Lake Creek Cemetery in Delta County. Kate & Eddie Johnson with their children, 1905.
