all i know so far is that memes seem to describe certain situations very well, they are an actual thing, so you can look at say christianity or buddhism (because i am familiar with these) . . . you can see the coding

i think a characteristic of tang and sung dynasty zen is the lack of literacy by most zen masters, you needed heirs or followers to have your pearls passed on, joshu i think was illiterate !

the odd thing about my time with toni packer who was important for me was that i was not experienced enough to talk to her about things it would have been useful to have a conversation about, the life issues of spending time on contemplative inquiry, and though it was to my advantage to be able to stay in what was really her creation, "the springwater center" i didnʼt feel she had made a right life choice for herself getting so involved in it and putting her remaining life so completely in it !

if you look at well known people who have made "contemplative inquiry" their lifeʼs work, nietzsche, dogen hakuin even the possibly executed bodhidharma and certainly assassinated huike, schopenhauer, van gogh, keats, dylan thomas, charles bukowski, there's a long list, the vast majority has made bad messes of their lives and like myself, taken every wrong turning in the book . .

A lot of people here are confused by user/zaddar1ʼs (andrew) unconventional style of commenting, so I am going to provide an introduction to the complexity and depth of his thought. I believe he is genuinely enlightened, but he is purposefully off-putting for a reason

What is zaddar saying ?

1) he is pushing to break you out of normalcy, or feeling secured with a false sense of stability in oneʼs conventional reality

2) he wants you recognize your sense of aloneness or solipsism and seek solitude in natural scenery to tacitly apprehend how the "I" is illusion, that you are nothing but stability and oscillation

3) he is encouraging creativity — this is harder to understand if you donʼt read good literature or poetry, check the bottom.

Zaddar wants you to respond to him with your own original thought, that emerges spontaneously from your own experience, and not reciting what you've heard elsewhere. I'm only doing this for people who are utterly confused by him. There is also a big importance on nutrition and financial stability in his approach

How does zaddar resemble and differ from modern Zen ?

Zaddar does encourage Shikantaza, but he doesnʼt value "proper posture" , which he rightly thinks destroys knees. To him, Shikantaza first and foremost is about letting thoughts occur and seeing the patterns, letting it dissolve. You let the thinking patterns breakdown or the mind turn on itself over and over again — it has no reference point. This can be done in strolls in natural scenery, a room, or other settings

How he differs, fundamentally, is his emphasis on creativity and reading high art. Zaddar believes when one is in solitude and mindful, that the words flow from the scenery, pointing to something deeper this life is a reflection of. Wang Wei and Han Shan wrote poetry in such states, so you should spit out a diamond too. Emily Dickinson and many other poets were enlightened too in Zaddarʼs view. What this requires is constant reading of high art and not wasting your life away in low-caliber art like video games or manga

Philosophy is a failing approximation of poetry to Zaddar, for poetry cannot be confined to terse language but has a fluidity that is of the ultimate reality

What does Zaddar think is reality ?

To Zaddar there is no bottom turtle, there is no fundamental ground. Reality is a recursive process, not a substance, so he is a process philosopher. His views resemble Derridaʼs who didnʼt accept "crystalline belief systems" as conforming to an unstable Becoming in this Universe. Becoming is recursive in that all dichotomies have "undecidables", or "trace", and "indeterminacy", to use Derridean terms; there is an interweaving movement between presence and absence in the meaning of what you say, and Zen gets to the root of this "writing forever", the insufficiency of ever coming to closure. To Zaddar, enlightenment is found in the quasi-border between the real and unreal, it is a union of both the imaginative and actual world. Therefore, a Zen Buddhist cannot eschew the phantasmagorical inner word. The artistic spirit was fundamental to early Zen, and abandoning it is to abandon the path. This is what fundamentally distinguishes Zaddar from contemporary Zen

What is up with Zaddarʼs obsession with celibacy and abstaining from entertainment ?

As Iʼve said, Zaddar places a lot of emphasis on breaking our sense of conventional reality. Constantly upending our sense of stability is what a Zen Buddhist does because reality is a topsy-turvy, upending Becoming. Whenever we form a dichotomy and cling to it, it will surely be upended, somehow. Zen Buddhists were celibate for a reason, in order to allow the mind to be fluid and unhindered

His approach seems too difficult for me !

This path is not for everyone. This is one reason Zaddar can be rude. He is tired of people half-assing Zen and making it into a communal thing. Zen was always more solipsistic and had a sense of individual creativity, such as Joshu. People have abandoned this and made it into a communal thing, into another religion. If being celibate, getting daily solitude in natural scenery, doing a lot of Shikantaza, reading good poetry, and so forth seem too much or difficult, then abandon the path or at least take it in a more humble and slow way, realizing everything you do is insufficient like ewk. This is not a prescription or telling you what to do, but suggestions because you are in this alone, not to show off to others. Once you realize Infinity , you ‘ get ’ something that can never be taken since you can sip from it a lot. The ending of Zerkalo becomes common-place in daily life

There is also a Magical Realism aesthetic to a lot of his own poetry you can read. His aesthetics resembles the Symbolists and Magical Realists moreso than the Surrealists. It took me awhile to get this. I think David Wiesnerʼs artwork is very Zaddar-esque

in the real world zen varies from quite buddhist to not buddhist, but even the buddhism is more like a “ cover ” and its core teachings are its own flavour and quite different from the conventional religious “ proxying ”

also it doesnʼt really have any overall organisation, each teacher is his own pope and thatʼs were the buck stops, people on r/zen without real life experience just have no inkling of this and try to enforce some christian or buddhist organisational or doctrinal schema in the nature of large organised religions !!
